  1. Sixth Grade Parent Meeting February 25, 2008

Looking Ahead • Tuesday, 3/4: Laurie Halse Anderson will be speaking to the public at 7 p.m. in the Benwood Auditorium of the Engineering Building at the corner of Palmetto and Fifth St., across from the Challenger Center. Following her presentation, Ms. Anderson will be signing books. Students who attend the event will earn 50 bonus pages on their reading logs for the third quarter. • Wednesday, 3/5: Group 5 volunteers at the Food Bank • Thursday, 3/6: The fourth annual Sixth Grade Art Opening will take place in the Roddy Theater lobby between 6:30 and 8:00 PM. Parents and students are invited to view the wonderful art work of the sixth grade, enjoy some refreshments, and build community for all or part of the evening. Dress is casual. • Monday - Wednesday, 3/10 - 12: Students will be administered the ERB standardized test. • Thursday, 3/13: Quarter 3 ends. Spring break begins at 11:50. • Tuesday, 3/25: Classes resume. • Monday, 3/31: March’s sixth grade parent meeting focussing on Substance abuse and middle school children will take place at 5:30 PM in the Old Chapel.

Expectations over time • Moving into the final quarter • Demands and expectations on students are increasing • Increasingly less time spent on organizational and logistical skills previously taught • Comprehension of new material dependent on previously learned concepts • Difficulty of curriculum increases • Speed of curriculum increases • Remember the long view

  5. What is the CTP 4? • A test designed to discriminate among students at the highest level. • The ERB vs. other standardized tests. • The CTP IV is administered in grades 6 – 9 at Baylor.

  6. How are CTP 4 results used? • The results can be used to evaluate student progress, including whether special attention, enrichment or different placement is warranted. • Test scores are broken into concept/skill areas that can be used to identify relative strengths and weaknesses. • The school as a whole can use results to evaluate how well the curriculum is working.

  7. Achievement vs. Reasoning Tests • The achievement tests help measure how well students are learning the curriculum. • The reasoning tests help measure a student’s skill base and higher order thinking ability.

  14. Interpreting Score Sheets • Which tests are administered? • What is a norm group? • Which norm group comparison should you use? • What is a stanine? • What is a percentile?

Things to keep in mind. • The CTP 4 is just one piece of the puzzle – remember, when it comes to student learning, more information is better • Keep perspective - students are comparing themselves against the “best” • Understand what to expect – not every person is good at everything • Think carefully about sharing results with your child

  16. What Can You do to help your child prepare? • Strike a balance between taking the tests seriously while not becoming anxious • Sleep • Breakfast • Exercise
