Teacher Expectations • We will communicate! • Through email, website, and students. • We will maintain website: www.bentonvilleorchestras.com • We will tune their instruments in class. • We have videos available of the “gold medal” songs to help your child learn these songs http://www.youtube.com/user/DianeHalliburton?feature=watch • We will participate in professional development and continuing education opportunities in order to provide your children with the best.

  6. Parent Expectations Motivating your child! • Be interested! • Listen to your child play. • Ask them to play for you! • Praise them for their work, not necessarily the product! • Attend community orchestra events. • Follow through with practice expectations, rewards, and consequences.

  7. Parent Expectations • Create an award and/or consequence system for practicing Ex. 100 days of practice = TREAT Whatever works best for your family! Follow through!

  8. Parent Expectations • Secure a quality, teacher approved, appropriately-sized instrument! • Create a practice space (first assignment) • Music stand • Metronome • Create a practice schedule and routine • Listening • Singing • Technique • Playing • Review

  9. Student Expectations • Practice 7 days each week, following the goals stated in your practice assignment. Focus on goals not time. • Attend and perform at two after-school concerts. • Bring your instrument to school and take it home on each orchestra day. • Don't touch the pegs! • Play standing up! (except for cello – sit tall!)

  12. Instrument Care • Wiping instruments • Clean, dry cloth. No chemicals. • Storage must be in a controlled environment. • Don't leave an instrument in your car • Beware of short stops at Wal-Mart! • Bow • Tension – tighten to play, loosen to store. • Don't touch the hair on the bow! • Use of rosin. • Repairs – Ray Palmer, Luthier www.palmerviolins.com

Instrument and Accessory Requirements • Violin and viola students must have shoulder rests! *Be sure to get the right size. • Cello and bass students must have endpin anchors, also known as "rock-stops." • Metronomes for home practice - check your phone for an app, or go to a metronome website: http://www.metronomeonline.com/ • Music stand for home practice
