  • Branch of Biology that deals with classification and naming living things.

  • Aristotle classified living things into only two categories—plants or animals.

  • So why classify further?

  • It provides organization and identification for studying organisms.

  • Common names vary from place to place and many do not accurately define a species.

    • Example: jellyfish
