  2. What is sound? • Merriam – Webster : a: a particular auditory impression : tone b: the sensation perceived by the sense of hearing c: mechanical radiant energy that is transmitted by longitudinal pressure waves in a material medium (as air) and is the objective cause of hearing

  3. For Video • Sound is defined as: The noises recorded as audio.

  4. Types of Sounds • Dialogue – On screen conversation between characters. • Voiceover – Narration or dialogue recorded independently and then paired with related video.

  5. Types of Sounds • Sound Effects – Noises that come from the world on the screen. • Tell me where you might be if you heard these sounds 12 • Sounds, without video, can be deceptive. They go hand in hand.

  6. Sound Implies • Existence – A mother watches out the window as her children get on the school bus. We don’t see the children or the bus, so how do we know it’s there? • Location – Sound is psychologically powerful in evoking a sense of place. The sound of the waves crashing on the beach.

  7. Sound Implies • Relationship – Sound brings together and unifies all of the components of the scene. How many of the sounds can you pick out from this scene?

  8. Mood and Emotion • Sound can set the overall mood or tone of the video. • Waves slowly crashing on the beach • Busy city streets • Howling winds • Sound can also impact your emotions • Echoing footsteps behind you • Sound of a gun loading • Fireworks
