DETAILS ABOUT THE PROJECT. • You may work on your own or in groups of 2. • We will be in the computer lab(1502) on the following days starting Tuesday: • 2/7, 2/8, 2/9, 2/10, 2/13 • The whole project is due on 2/15/09 • The project is worth 50 pts • You will also need an illustration of your tank. • The tank illustration and presentation is worth 20 pts.

  3. YOU ARE GIVEN A BUDGET… • You and your partner are given a $5,000 grant to use to create your tank. • Do not go over budget you will lose points • There will be awards and prizes for the • Cheapest • Most expensive • Best Design

  4. TYPE OF TANK • You want to decide what tank you want to build. There are many types • Fish only- Reef tank-Seagrass Bed- Seahorse tank- Hard/Soft Coral Tank

  5. SIZE OF TANK • You should know what types of organisms that you want to help you decide on a tank size. • Find a creative shaped tank.

  6. TYPE OF CREATURES • You should consult with your compatibility chart to make sure that the fish you choose will work together. • Keep aggressive w/ aggressive • Keep passive with your passive • You will run the risk of your fish eating other fish.

  7. SUBSTRATE • Live Sand- Comes with good nutrients and necessary creatures • Aqua gems- bright colored rochs • Shell grit, Crushed Coral • Marble, Limestone • BE CAREFUL- Some of these substrates will change your water chemistry

  8. TANK HEATING • Find the temperature your fish need to survive. • You then need to figure how much water each piece of heating equipment will heat. • THEY CAN BE submersible (in the tank) in the filter, or a sump pump

  9. TANK FILTRATION • You can pick a Bio filter, This has necessary bacteria in it needed to process dead, decay or waste materials. • See if you need a protein skimmer. • You should see what is recommended for your fish.

  10. TANK LIGHTING • 4 MAIN TYPES OF LIGHTING • 1- Incandescent- produces much heat and various colors • 2- Fluorescent- Best all around for many situations. • 3- Compact- more light and brighter tank • 4- Metal Halide- produce a sun like effect for coral reefs.

  11. TANK DECOR • DO NOT USE WOOD OR METAL DÉCOR!!! • Fish need a sense of protection and somewhere to hide. • Fake plants, Shipwrecks, Castles are all traditional décor. You can also use live rock.

  12. TANK MAINTENANCE and CONSIDERATIONS • You Must include a Chemistry Kit • You must purchase SALT • You must purchase a Refractometer • You must purchase a Food Source
