  1. Introduction to the Sira of Our Habib PBOHLesson PlanThe Meccan PeriodClass SevenElla Collins Institute / ISBCC MosqueImam Ibrahim A. RahimSister Mariam N. Ismail TASpring 2013

  2. Week #7 The great lesson of migration and the moral laws upon which migration was instituted.Group Presentation:Demonstrate the migration (Hijrah) in establishing the discipline(s) necessary to sustain personal and communal Muslim Life as given in the Sira of our Habib PBOH. Provide examples of destructive culture within Islam that must be abandoned via a mass process of migration.

  3. The Trials Intensified and Temptations Became GreatWhen things grew to an unbearable point Mother of the believers Umm Selamah relates the following:“The circumstances grew to an unbearable level of intense persecution from Quraysh to all of the Companions. And because the Habib PBOH was the only protected Muslim at the time: shielded by his uncle.

  4. Our Habib informed the Companions:"ان بأرض الحبشة ملكا لا يظلم أحد عنده, فألحقوا ببلاده حتى يجعل الله لكم فرجا و مخرجا مما أنتم فيه."“In the land of H’aba Shah [Ethiopia] there is a just king who will not mistreat any who come before him. I want you to go to his land. In doing so, it is my hope that Allah will Unburden you and make a way out of this persecution for you.”

  5. " أيها الملك ان فتية منا سفهاء فارقوا دين قومهم, و لم يدخلوا في دينك, و جاءوا بدين مبتدع لا نعرفه, و قد لجـأوا الى بلادك, فبعثنا اليك فيهم عشائرهم: اَباؤهم, و أعمامهم, و قومهم لتردهم عليهم."“Dear King Najashi: we’ve come seeking a misguided group of our own people who have become separatists; disavowing their own religion, the religion of their own people. They won’t even enter your religion! They have come up with some new religion that no one has ever heard of. They have come to your land to seek shelter. We have been sent after them to return them safely to their families. Their fathers and uncles await them. Please return them to us.”

We worshipped idols. We ate the flesh of dead animals. We injured our neighbors. We made lawful the things that [God] made unlawful. We killed one another in cold blood. We did not know or care to know what [God] considered lawful or unlawful. Then [God] sent to us a Prophet PBOH from amongst us. A man we knew and therefore, a man we could trust. He is honorable, truthful and trustworthy. He called us to the worship of one [God]; Allah. We worship Allah and will not worship any other [God] except Allah!”

  7. Here we note very clearly the critical nature of the lessons spoken by the Habib PBOH into the hearts of the companions within the structure of the House of Al-Arqam and within the Household of our Habib PBOH before it. We say: Allahu Akbar, for the Blessing of Islam. We also offer our greatest Du A’a for the Blessing of Ja’ far Ibn Aby Talib MAP who spoke this eloquently for the “survival” of Islam before this Christian King. This must become a “defining” moment in the spirit, psyche and heart of all Sira Seekers!

  8. Then the king looked at Ja’ far and asked him:هل معك شيء مما جاء بهDo you have anything from this Prophet to share with us?

  10. Upon hearing the Holy Quran speak so passionately and with such high regard for the family of Christ Jesus, King Najashi began to weep. Do you know how difficult it is to make a king cry? However, the King of kings [Allah] Makes us all cry! It is said that he cried so much the tears dripped off of his beard and all of those in his court wept at the beauty of the Holy Quran. Then the king said:

  11. "ان هذا الكلام ليخرج من المشكاة التي جاء بها موسى, انطلقوا راشدين, لا والله لا أردهم عليكم و لا أنعمكم عينا."“These words come from the same lit lantern that Moses himself brought to us. All of you Muslims go in peace, you are rightly guided people. This is my decree: by Allah, I will never return them to you and my eye will never look upon you favorably.”

What do you say about Christ Jesus?

  13. Ja’ far responded;"نقول: هو عبد الله و رسوله و كلمته و روحه ألقاها الى مريم العذراء البتول."“We say of Christ Jesus: that he is the servant of Allah and he is Allah’s Messenger, and he is Allah’s Word, and he is Allah’s Spirit, and that Allah Cast His Spirit upon Mary, and that Mary was and remains a virgin.”The king responded:اذهبوا فأنت شيوم (اٌمنون) بأرضي“Go in peace, you will be forever safe in my land!”

  14. In this brief encounter we learn the foundations for comparative dialogue between the People of the Book and Muslims. It was imperative for Ja’ Far to know five critical points about Christianity as given in Islam’s theology: Islam acknowledges Christ Jesus PBOH as:1) Allah’s servant, 2) Allah’s Messenger, 3) Allah’s Word, 4) Allah’s Spirit and 5) Christ Jesus’ mother Mary as a Virgin. This is why only informed people must be the ones we promote to represent Islam in public. This is why we’re proud to present this knowledge at ECI and to be on the cutting edge of an academic renaissance that will change the cultural and academic landscape of Islam in the United States, In Sha Allah.

  15. What is Migration (Hijra)? The term migration implies: to separate one’s self from a thing

  16. There are three ways to achieve this:

  17. #1Separation within the body الهِجْرَاْنِ بالبدنوَٱهۡجُرُوهُنَّ فِى ٱلۡمَضَاجِعِrefuse to share their, beds [4:34 an-Nisa]

  18. #2Separation within the faculty of language Then the Messenger will say: "O my Lord! truly my people took this Qur'an for just foolish nonsense." (25:30 Al-Furqan)

  19. #3Separation within the “spiritual dimension” الهِجْرَاْنِ بالقلب وَٱلرُّجۡزَ فَٱهۡجُرۡ And all abomination shun! (74:5)

  20. Lastly, mental, physical and spiritual impurities must all be migrated away from by the law of the Holy Quran. Imam Al-Jowhary امام الجوهريdefines migration as: the opposite of connecting or ضد الوصل. In that he gives an example that I think is extremely demonstrative. He avoided the sick person. Another way to translate this sentence is: He quarantined the sick person.

  21. As Muslims, we are constantly attempting to quarantine ourselves from the many diseases of the heart seeking to exterminate our Iman. This is how we take the lessons of language and apply them to our spirituality. This is a technique I observed growing up in the Mosque. It is a technique developed and first utilized in the western world by Imam W. D. Mohammed AHM. The point here is: even Arabic Grammar can improve your capacity to be a more thoughtful Muslim. One must only be willing to push one’s self a little.

  22. I am equally humbled by the great historical words of U’Mar MAP who said this:"هَاْجِرُوْا و لا تُهَجِرُوْا"“Migrate, don’t front by feigning migration!”In other words, don’t use the terminology of the companions when you have no intention of being like them! This is called “faking it” or “false migration” as properly termed by U’Mar تَهَجُرٌ.

  23. The best definition of the term Hijra that I have seen is that given by Imam Ibnul Qayyim AHM.

  24. First: The migration to Allah Himself. This migration is achieved by placing a sincere request before Allah. Migration is done by developing sincere love for Allah. Migration is done by worshipping Allah as a mature Muslim. Migration is done by developing a real reliance upon Allah [no phoniness]. Migration is done by actual repentance to Allah. Migration is done by completely surrendering one’s self to Allah. Migration is done by authorizing Allah in your life as your proxy! Migration is done by genuinely fearing Allah. Migration is done by only yearning for Allah. Migration is done by exclusively turning your face in Allah’s Direction. Migration is done by sincerely seeking Allah’s Shelter. Migration is done by devaluing life with each new breath you take: every new breath one takes must mean you covet this world that much more “LESS.”

  25. Second: Then migration to the Messenger of Allah PBOH. Migration to Allah’s Messenger PBOH is done by moving like him in every way. Migration to Allah’s Messenger PBOH is done by coming into stillness and remaining still as he did. Migration to Allah’s Messenger PBOH is done by controlling yourself inwardly and outwardly. This is the path to living a complete life that is in agreement with the Habib’s Shari A’h [Law]. The lesson we learn from the Habib’s Law PBOH is that which completely dissects for us all aspects of Allah’s Love and reveals to us how to obtain Allah’s Acceptance. This is following the Sunnah. Allah will not Accept any other form of Islam from any of you! Any alternative form of so-called Muslim Living is nothing more than living with the “flesh”: a standard that does not and cannot feed the soul in preparation for the Hereafter!”

قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم: "أن تهجر ما كره ربك عز و جل" رواه النسائي “What is the greatest Hijra-migration Messenger of Allah? He responded: to make Hijra (to migrate) away from everything that Allah does not Like.”

To those who leave their homes in the cause of Allah, after suffering oppression― We will assuredly give a goodly home in this world: but truly the reward of the Hereafter will be greater if they only realize (this)! (16:41) (They are) those who persevere in patience, and put their trust on their Lord. (16:42 An-Nahl)

  29. “Come before me and pledge allegiance to me based upon the following terms:That you will not associate partners with Allah. That you will not steal. That you will not fornicate. That you will not kill your children. That you will not engage in slander or any means of false testimony. That you will not disobey me in anything that I command you: all of my commandments are to be understood as the “general good” of Islam.

  30. Whoever abides by these stipulations, will receive their reward from Allah. And whoever breaks any of these stipulations and is subsequently punished, that punishment will erase the sin of their transgression. However, whoever breaks any of these stipulations and is subsequently not punished and is covered by Allah, that person’s fate is left to Allah: if Allah Wills, He will Punish them or if Allah Wills, He will Forgive them.”

  32. “Pledge allegiance to me insofar as:Hearing what I say to you and obeying it whether you are full of energy or tired from fatigue.Giving your money in Zakat whether your wealth is severely restricted or abundant.Encouraging one another in goodness and holding one another back from sin.In standing up for Allah at all costs: never running from a foe no matter how considerable. In supporting me unconditionally if I come to Al-Medina.By defending me with the same measures of defense you would use to defend and protect your families.”

  33. We started with a discussion of a light emanating on the special day of the birth of our Habib and followed that light into the stillness of a cave. Then into the arms of a caring wife into light of mission that lives today and shall continue to stand for all days to come. In the end, we are reaffirmed in the knowledge that more than ever after this experience we proclaim: Nothing is worthy of worship in existence except Allah and Muhammad is the servant and Messenger of Allah PBOH
