  2. Engineering Production Challenges • Earlier this year in response to concerns about Controls readiness for installation, engineering teams were formed to address design, integration and production issues • Some specific concerns… • Lagging procurement, indicating slow progress in a number of areas, threatening injector commissioning • Some activities such as cable plant design were as much as 6 months behind the schedule

  3. Control System Integration • Some specific concerns… • While we are generally successful in designing a system, difficulties were experienced in the production stages leading to the field installation • Lack of sufficient technical expertise in a number of areas, particularly in electronics hardware engineering • Lack of sufficient personnel to complete the product lifecycle particularly in the areas of coordination, design, documents, fabrication and installation • Integration issues, both within controls as well as with other LCLS systems

  4. LCLS Engineering Teams • The goals for the Engineering Teams were: • Multi-disciplinary teams to managing the full product lifecycle from specification and design to engineering development, production, installation and commissioning • To ensure communication among all disciplines, and that all interface issues are addressed • Each team has representatives from Controls, CPE, Mechanical Systems, Physics, CF, etc. • There will be an integrated project meeting for each subsystem with all the relevant disciplines represented

  5. LCLS Controls Engineering Teams • Team activities have included: • Developing a schedule covering all phases leading to installation and commissioning • Production of appropriate documents (ESD, ICD, etc.) and design reviews • Interfacing with Mario Ortega, Mike DiSalvo and Bob Fuller to coordinate procurement • Interfacing with various shops to complete the back-end of the project leading to field installation

  6. LCLS Controls Engineering Teams • Safety Systems • PPS • Bong, Fitch, J. Brown, Saleski • Laser Safety • Bong, Fitch, Brown, Gilevich, Bill White, Saleski • Beam Stoppers (PPS) • Bong, Roster, V. Brown, Langton • MPS • Norum, Alarcon, Tilghman, Browne • Toroids Ion chambers, PLIC, limit switches • Norum, B. Bennett, Simmons, Traeger, Montagne • BCS • Alarcon, Bennett, Simmons Traeger, Saleski, Montagne

  7. LCLS Controls Engineering Teams • Beam Instrumentation and Diagnostics • BPMs (stripline type) • Straumann, Smith, Johnson, Medvedko, V. Smith • Toroids • Cecere, S. Smith, Browne, Peng, Montagne, Dowell • Profile monitors, OTR, YAG, etc. • Peng, Roster, V. Brown, Montagne, D. Martin, Loos • Faraday cup • Cecere, Roster, V. Brown, Rago • Bunch length monitor • Peng, Frisch, S. Smith, Borden, Wu

  8. LCLS Controls Engineering Teams • Global Controls • Timing System • Allison, Akre, Browne, D. Brown, Dusatko, White, Lewis • LLRF • Akre, Kotturi, Olsen, Dusatko, Browne • Mover systems (wire scanners, BC1, collimators, tune-up dump) • Murray, Porter, J. Bong, Tilghman, Langton, Montagne (collimators), Krejcik • Vacuum system • Schuh, Porter, O’Neal L. Eriksson, S. Lewis • Data communications and networks • Lahey (& team), Murray, Hooker& Granieri (SCCS)

  9. LCLS Controls Engineering Teams • High level applications, Feedback systems • Fairley, Rogind, Zelazny, Chevtsov, Allison • Power supplies • Luchini, Bellomo, MacNair, DeLira, Rogind, R. Carr, • Laser controls (cameras, motion control, insertion) • Peng, White, Roster, Yee, V. Brown, Dowell, Miahnahri • Laser Heater – Controls • Peng, White, Roster, Yee, R. Carr, Miahnahri • Temperature monitoring & control • Schuh, Tilghman, Nguyen, Dowell, Emma, Cutino • General signal distribution (cables plant, racks, crates, patch panels, etc.) • Ortega, Tilghman, S. Nguyen

  10. Engineering Teams – Progress Report • The engineering team approach has been a success in addressing the issues that prevented us from proceeding from design to successful installation • Successes… • More awareness of the production issues such as design documents, wiring diagrams, fabrication, shop orders, etc. • Production issues are increasingly handled within teams • Opportunities… • Interface issues – “Controls” is every where, however the teams are not always included in system discussions in other departments • Insufficient number of coordinators, designers, electricians, etc. to serve all the teams • The production “shops” are over loaded • Not all the teams are self-sufficient enough to complete their systems independently.

  11. Summary – The integration of LCLS Controls with SLAC has been a success • Our “production” issues have been addressed and to some extent solve, but opportunities exist • We are in a much better position to proceed with the rest of the project, linac, undulator, etc. • Controls integration has been vital in completing our projects • We need to “staff up” in key production areas to have a smoother installation phase in the future
