  1. Earth Camp SAFFRON / ROOTS&SHOOTS

  2. Earth Camp 1. Goals 2. Public 3. Leitmotiv 4. Missions

  3. 1. Goals • To have a new look on our planet: • Biodiversity. Discover and understand the interrelationships between living species, their functioning, their complexity and ... their beauty • Space.Demonstrate the impact of space science and technology in environmental knowledge and management. • Eco-Citizen.Understand the ecological issues and become “Eco-Citizen“ • Sciences. Encourage to follow scientific careers.

  4. 2. Target public • The Earth Camp is  a2-3day Residential programme for students between 8 and 16 years. • Our philosophy: « Make Science Fun »  and « Knowledge through doing »

  5. Natura 2000sites 3. Leitmotiv Biological life cycle BIOSPHERE Earth Melissa (E.S.A) Everything is inter-connected! Understanding and Ecocitizenschip

  6. 4. Missions Introduction Extraterrestrial message The participating students have received cries for help from Extraterrestrials. Their planet's resources have been destroyed by the carelessness of its inhabitants. All, large organizations and private citizens, have had bad practices: destruction of natural habitats, soil, ... all leading to the loss of biodiversity, thus to the extinction of all life. The students must urgently look for scientific collaborators to help these unfortunates

  7. On the ground: In order to make themselves useful, scientists will conduct various missions: Survey and observations in the fields Laboratory experiment Discovery of advanced technologies Missions success will be measured by the ability of scientists to understand the mechanisms of life and pass them on to the exo-ravaged planet. Saffron ECO CAMP

  8. Exploration of the Natura 2000 site based on the adaptation to living environments and study of biodiversity Use of space technologies in environmental management (Space Bel, Earth Observation, Argos) The walk is carried out with location scouting "GPS" explaining the techniques used by this system Mission 1 Exploration Everything is inter-connected! Understanding and Ecocitizenschip

  9. Our staff will highlight some of the complex phenomenas of life through observation and experimentation Main areas of investigation: Photosynthesis (parallel with the solar panels of the Euro Space Center) Animal and plant respiration Lactic fermentation The flow of sap in plants The role of worms in soil Mission 2 Life cycle experiment Everything is inter-connected! Understanding and Ecocitizenschip

  10. Astronomy Journey among the stars and communication with space Mission 3 Everything is inter-connected! Understanding and Ecocitizenschip

  11. Even though there is a lot of water on Earth, water quality is a scarce resource and its protection is everyone's responsibility. Our scientists will visit wetlands, conduct water samples and analyze them to determine their quality. These tests and observations are an opportunity to practice and expand their scientific knowledge. They will filter the water and discover the problem of pollution, of groundwater and rivers. Mission 4 In search of blue gold

  12. Soil is more than an inert substrate. Home to millions of species, from badgers to bacteria, it forms this rich and fragile substrate on which the plants grow. Scientists will study composting, the roles of worms and other inhabitants of the soil as well as waste management. They conduct experiments to understand the soil permeability and the phenomenon of erosion. Scientists will use satellite maps to understand the effects of intensive agriculture necessary to our society’s type of consumering. Soil Investigation Mission 5

  13. How to help the Extraterrestrials ? Through their investigations and observations, our scientists have understood the relationship of interdependence that governs life as we know it on Earth. Now, how can they send organisms to extraterrestrials considering that they will have to survive the long journey to the exo-planet ? Presentation of MELISSA project Construction of a biosphere

  14. Biosphere Presentation of MELiSSA For the colonization of space, man needs, among other constraints, to ensure his survival in closed artificial systems. Whether during long journeys or in permanent space stations. This is why ESA has created MELISSA which is certainly one of the most successful ecosphere projects. Our scientists will build on this project to help the extraterrestrial in need.

  15. Biosphere Construction of a biosphere In order to send life to the exo-planet in distress, they will enclose it in an eco-system called artificial biosphere. They must find a balance that will allow life to continue and grow for a long time. This is a tricky task because the biosphere is a reduced and simplified model of our blue planet. Its balance is so fragile.

  16. Commitment pact Consequences of the missions: Students send their solutions to the extraterrestrials (biosphere) Beginning of a new mission : How could students get involved in the protection of life on Earth? How could we prevent the development of such a scenario on our planet? Signature of their commitment pacts
