  1. Primary and Secondary Sources • Primary Sources are ORIGINAL materials. • ORIGINAL writings, ORIGINAL items, quotes, autobiography. Anything that is original is a PRIMARY SOURCE.

  2. Primary Sources • ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS - Diaries, speeches, manuscripts, letters, interviews, news film footage, autobiographies, official records • CREATIVE WORKS: Poetry, drama, novels, music, art  • RELICS OR ARTIFACTS: Pottery, furniture, clothing, buildings

  3. Examples of Primary Sources • Diary of Anne Frank - Experiences of a Jewish family during WWII  • A journal article reporting NEW research or findings  • Weavings and pottery - Native American history  • Plato's Republic - Women in Ancient Greece 

  4. Primary and Secondary Sources • Secondary Sources are COPIES. They are not originals.

  5. Secondary Sources • PUBLICATIONS: Textbooks, magazine articles, criticisms, commentaries, encyclopedias 

  6. Examples of Secondary Sources • A journal/magazine article which interprets or reviews previous findings  • A history textbook  • A book about the effects of WWI  • A replica of a Civil War outfit

  7. Tertiary Sources • These sources contain both PRIMARY and SECONDARY sources.

  8. For example: A Soldier's Civil War uniform, only the buttons are replicas because the originals could not be found. This is a TERTIARY Source because the uniform is authentic (original) but the buttons are copies. Get it?? Tertiary Sources

  9. Another example: A piece of writing that contains quotes from eye witnesses and second hand knowledge of information from stories passed down from one generation to the next. This is a TERTIARY Source because the quotes and eye witnesses are considered primary sources, but the stories that are second hand are considered secondary sources. It is all written in one article, so it is a TERTIARY source. Get it?? Tertiary Sources

  21. 6. The code of Hammurabi. The Code of Hammurabi is a well-preserved Babylonian law code, dating back to about 1772 BC. It is one of the oldest deciphered writings of significant length in the world Diorite stela inscribed with the Code of Hammurabi, 18th century BCE.

ATTILA THE HUN BIOGRAPHY 406-453 Attila the Hun was an infamous, vicious barbarian King who attacked the Roman Empire and was so fierce he was named "THE SCOURGE OF GOD"! Attila the Hun was the legendary king of the Huns - a Mongoloid people who began invading the Roman Empire in the 300's. Attila was so furious in his attacks, he was named "SCOURGE OF GOD"! The Huns were originally from a tribe of Mongolians from Central Asia, who settled in the area known later as Hungary.
