  1. Primary Sources • Primary sources Primary sources are the raw materials of history — original documents and objects which were created at the time under study. They are different from secondary sources, accounts or interpretations of events created by others without first hand experience. • Why use primary sources? Primary sources provide a window into the past—unfiltered access to the record of Political, Economic, Religious, Social, Intellectual, and Artisitc thought and achievement during the specific period under study, produced by people who lived during that period.

  2. Letters from Jefferson and Adams • Did you know that Jefferson and Adams communicated until the day of their deaths? • Did you know these letters still survive? • Did you know they died on the same day? On the 4th of July? • Are their letters primary sources?

Secondary Sources Secondary Sources A secondary source of information is one that was created later by someone who did notexperience first-hand or participate in the events or conditions under study. Why we use secondary sources? For the purposes of a historical research project, secondary sources are generally scholarly books and articles. Also included would be reference sources like encyclopedias. Often the best secondary sources are those that have been published most recently.

  5. Primary Source Game • Write “P” if you think it is a Primary source. • Write “S” if you think it is a secondary source.

  6. Biography • A biography is a detailed description or account of someone's life. A biography is more than a list of impersonal facts (education, work, relationships, and death), it also portrays the subject's experience of those events. A biography presents the subject's story, highlighting various aspects of his or her life, including intimate details of experiences, and may include an analysis of the subject's personality.

  7. Autobiography • An autobiographyis the same as a biography only the material, or text, is written by the subject himself/ herself.

  8. Bio or Autobio? • Write Bio or Auto bio on your white board when you see the following slides.
