  1. “10 Golden Questions”forConcept Exploration&Development Dr. Dan C. Surber Surberd@indy.raytheon.com (317) 306-4114

  2. Overview • Definitions • 10 “Golden Questions” • Apply to Audience Examples • Summary • Q & A

  3. Definitions • Concept Exploration • CONOPS • Systems Engineering Life Cycle • System, Product, Component • Concurrent Engineering • Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)

  4. “10 Golden Questions” • Who are the SYSTEM stakeholders? • What are the goals/objectives/constraints? • User/Maintainer/Sustainer • Operations, Support. • Mission scenarios. • Production, sustainment, supply chain. • Life cycle needs for growth/improvement (P3I) • Enterprise stakeholder goals, objectives and constraints? • What is the market for this SYSTEM? • Where? • When? • Why? • How funded?

  5. “10 Golden Questions” • What are the external constraints the SYSTEM must satisfy? • What is the operating and support concept for the SYSTEM ? • Major states, modes, transitions • Environments • Operating & Maintaining • Storage & Shipping/Transportation • Measures of Effectiveness • Life Cycle Cost & Cost of Ownership

  6. “10 Golden Questions” • What is the SYSTEM architecture context? • People • Facilities • Support equipment (tools & testers) • Manufacturing process capabilities • Training • What are the man-machine interface criteria to be satisfied by the SYSTEM ? • Operators & Maintainers • Market unique standards (ISO, ANSI, etc.)

  7. “10 Golden Questions” • What are the SYSTEM attributes? • Four (4) types of ‘requirements’: • Performance • Environmental • Interface • Design Constraints • Format of ‘requirements’: • Value, Relation, Units • Method of Verification (IADTS) • What are the SYSTEM functions (behaviors) that will satisfy the SYSTEM attributes?

  8. “10 Golden Questions” • What happens if the SYSTEM fails to satisfy or perform as defined by 1-9? • Potential “effects of failure” (qualitative, worst case) • Severity • Likelihood of occurrence • What should be done to control or mitigate the potential for those SYSTEM failures? • Design • Manufacturing • Training • Usage limitations or advisories Questions 1-10 an be repeated using PRODUCT or COMPONENT.

  9. Examples from the Audience!!

  10. Summary • Customers often want more than they will tell us. • Ask questions to find out what is most important. • Think of the life cycle, the user & those who must support and sustain the system: • Product Development • Product’s in-service • Systems have several layers in their architectures, think it through from multiple perspectives. • Ask “what if it failsto------?!” Often!!!!
