Requirements • Your letter should be written to an adult • The letter must be at least 3 paragraphs • Introduction • Body • Conclusion • CONVENTIONS!! (spelling, grammar, capitalization, written neatly, and in pen) • Final copy must be on loose leaf paper • No fringes on the sides please
Writing your letter… Friendly Letter Format Example
Brainstorm… • Brainstorm a list of 3 people you think you could write a letter to • Again this could be an aunt, uncle, grandparent, teacher, friend’s parent… • Jot down a few ideas for each person. • If one really jumps out at you, you can begin to jot down more detail for that one person
Address/Date • Before your begin writing your letter you must include a return address and date • This is your name and address It should look something like this 804 Towhee Trail Port Washington, WI 53074 March 1, 2011 • Your address/date should be in the top right side of your paper (ABOVE your greeting)
Beginning your writing • Begin with a greeting/salutation • “Dear ________ , • Introduction • “I wanted to write to you to tell you…” • “Today we were thinking about someone who inspired us and I thought of you because…” • PLEASE make sure you have at least 3 sentences per paragraph *Remember there is a reason you are writing this letter make sure you are being sincere
Body of your letter • By now you should have told your reader why you chose them to write about • Now, go in to more detail • How did they change your life • How did what they do help you This doesn’t have to be just one paragraph. Remember you are still writing your rough draft here.
Conclusion/Closing • Purpose: Lets the reader know that you are finished with your writing. • Usually ends with a Sincerely, Sincerely yours, Thank you, etc. • Don’t forget to: • Capitalize the first letter of your closing • Sincerely • Put a comma at the end of your closing • Sincerely your,
