  1. Essential Dental Care Tips for Teens

  2. Teenagers Dental Care • Teenagers are usually occupied with school and social activities so dental care unfortunately takes a backseat. However, this should not be the case. • When this continues, it can lead to mouth problems that may require more complex treatments. Ensuring that your teen gets to see their dentist regularly will help keep their oral health in good shape.

  3. Here are more tips to help them keep their oral health protected:

  4. Stay Committed to Good Dental Care Habits • Your family dentist will not be there every day to remind your teens about their dental care routine. Bulk of the responsibility lies in your teen. Remind them to brush and floss regularly, especially before sleeping. • Forgetting to clean the mouth before resting at night gives bacteria a chance to invade and cause damages. This is especially the case for teens that are using orthodontic devices. Orthodontic devices may trap food debris and make cleaning more challenging that’s why they need more attention.

  5. Encourage them to Wear Custom Mouth Guards • If your teen is heavily engaged in sports, it’s best to accompany them to your dentist so they can receive a custom-made mouth guard. Using mouthguards will help your child prevent injuries and damages to the mouth and surrounding areas in the event of an accident. • A mouth guard is removable so they don’t have to worry about it limiting their movement. The advantage of mouthguards done at the dental office over the readily available options is its snug fit and effectiveness. Your child will benefit more from their mouthguard if it’s made according to their specific needs.

  6. Avoid Smoking • It’s no longer a secret that smoking is a dangerous habit not only for dental health but also for overall health. Make sure that your teen prevents smoking, as much as possible, as this long-term habit usually starts during teenage years. • If you smoke yourself, work on withdrawing from the habit so your kids don’t pick it up. Remember that kids learn best through example from their parents and or elders.

  7. Remind them about making Healthy Food Choices • Kids naturally love sweets and carbohydrates. You can’t be around round the clock to guard them so what you can do is help them adopt healthier food choices. • Let them carry fruit slices if they needs snacks. Advise them to always drink water after every meal, even if they’ve already had another drink. Water is the healthiest drink and is also the most dental-friendly.

  8. Good Dental Care Habits at Home • Continue to lead practice of good dental care habits at home. Replace brushes every three to four months and ensure that everyone uses one with soft bristles. Let your teen carry their own dental care kit anywhere they go. It shouldn’t take much space after all and it could prevent them from experiencing toothaches. • No matter how busy your teens may be, talk to them about making some time for their regular appointments. After all, once every six months or twice a year is the least they need, and should maintain that way until they grow older with good dental health.
