  1. Clauses and Phrases A clause is a group of words that contains both a subject and a verb that complement each other. A phrase is a group of words that does not contain a subject or a verb that complement each other.

  2. Clauses and Phrases Clause: contain a subject and verb. If they form complete thoughts, we call them independentclauses. If they form incomplete thoughts, we call them dependent or subordinate clauses. Phrase: are word clusters lacking subject and verb combinations. Added slide

  4. A related group of words with a subject and predicate is called a clause. • A clause that makes sense by itself is an independent clause. • A clause that does not make sense by itself is a dependent/subordinate clause. • A complex sentence contains an independent and dependent clause.
