Vocabulary words • Local- close to home, neatly; having to do with a city, county, town, village, or other small government. • County board- small group of people elected to make laws for and run the government of the county. • Assessor-a local official who decides how much tax people must pay on their land, houses, building, and other things they own.

  3. to be Continued • District attorney – a lawyer who works for the government and bring accused persons to trial. • Prosecute – to take legal action against someone in court. • City council – small group of people elected to make laws and run a city’s government. • Mayor – a person elected as chief executive of a city.

Cont. • City manager- a person who works for the city government as the top administrator. • City commission- small group of people elected to make laws for a city and run city government, each person on it is also the head of a local department. • Community services office- office that helps people find out what services they can get from county, city, or town government.

  5. Cont. • Community group- a group run by private organizations to help people in need.

  6. What does the local government do? • The local government pays roads for people to drive safe. • Writing and managing plans for your area’s development including management of natural and urban environment. • Making laws and enforcing them. • Participating in community partnerships, initiatives such as reducing crimes, increasing jobs or access to housing. • Civil defence planning and emergency preparedness.

  7. Countygovernment • Carry out the laws of the state. Set taxes and decide how the money be spent. Keep track of all births, marriage certificates, and deaths in the county.

  8. City government • Many cities set their governments in different ways. They tend to follow one of these three plans such as City council- mayor plan, City council-city manager plan, and commission plan. • City council-mayor plan-is a person itself a mayor that runs the city council meetings and a chief of executive of the city.

  9. Cont. • City council- city manager plan- a city manager’s job is to carry out executive jobs. City managers have a special training to run a city like business. • Commission plan- group of members that was called commissioners that have the same power as the city council members, and usually commissioners are the head of a city department, recreation.

  10. Local government services • Local departments take care of the most needs of a city or county’s people. Such as special needs and problems. • They have answers for people’s questions they know what government can do to help people make their lives better. • The services that the local government pay for is low-cost health care, help for senior citizens, and schooling for adults.

Cont. • Low-cost health care- most countries have public health center where people go get the health care for free, or at low cost. • Help for senior citizens- special place where senior citizens go to socialize, and take part in activities. And can use public transportation and receive meals at low cost.

  12. Cont. • Schooling for adults- in local schools where the adults that didn’t finish high school. They go in night time.

  13. Community groups • Local governments provide needs for people in community. For example in community people work together to make their community to be a better place to live. Groups like church groups, school groups, and many more that help give back to the community.
