  1. Beth El Temple Center September 2007 BETC Leadership DevelopmentInstitute Team Proposal to the BOT:Planning for the Future “If you will it, it is no dream” Theodore Herzl

  2. Planning for the future – BETC LDI Team LDI & BETC The Leadership Development Institute is a special program created by the Combined Jewish Philanthropies Commission on Continuity and Education. The primary goals of the year-long LDI program are: 1) to support synagogues as they strive to enrich the quality of their congregational communities, and 2) to enable present and future congregational leaders to develop leadership skills and help manage change more effectively. In 2006, our Board decided that BETC would participate in the Leadership Development Institute. The BETC LDI Team: A cross-section of temple members/lay leaders along with the Rabbi and the current and incoming temple presidents: Leslie Copes-Finke, Lynne Delise, Louise Domenitz, Brad Harkavy, Rabbi Kraus, Ed Mattison, Jill Tapper, Lisa Weissmann

  4. Planning for the future – BETC LDI Team The Evolution of the Strategic Planning Process at BETC Core LDI Work We considered a number of aspects of Beth El, and potential opportunities for strengthening our congregation based on our ongoing observations and past Board conversations. Our efforts build on prior work of the congregation, e.g., past congregational surveys, the Mission Statement process and the February Board retreat. We chose “strategic planning” as our project to propose to the Board. - The Board discussed and reviewed this proposal in June and in September, and voted overwhelmingly to support the Strategic Planning Process

  5. Planning for the future – BETC LDI Team The Evolution of the Strategic Planning Process at BETC June Board Presentation Initial proposal for consideration of a Strategic Planning process that would include creating a “Strategic Planning Leadership Action Team” and would use CJP’s LDI professional consultant to facilitate the process. June-August Board Feedback We heard from several board members who were, overall, supportive of the LDI team’s Strategic Planning proposal. Among their concerns were: Clarity of the product (need for examples) Potential of divisive process Differentiation from past efforts (i.e. Mission process) Communication Importance of demonstrating need/urgency

  6. Planning for the future – BETC LDI Team Strategic Planning - Why? What do we want as a congregation? Where are we going? How do we want to do our organizational business? How do we want to be with each other? How do we move forward and make changes asa spiritual Jewish institution? A Strategic Planning process can provide a healthy framework for these questions and for the implementation of the answers.

  7. Planning for the future – BETC LDI Team A “Snapshot” of BETC Today What do we do well now? What don't we do well now? + We are an active community. - We have so many programs that they often get diluted. We offer a wide variety of events and programs We have a consistently full calendar of meetings, programs, & activities Our programs and activities often overlap, thereby diluting the audience, exhausting volunteers and committees, and straining our infrastructure (staff, clergy, professionals)‏

  8. Planning for the future – BETC LDI Team A “Snapshot” of BETC Today What do we do well now? What don't we do well now? + We have a dedicated group of volunteers who work long hours and give their hearts and souls to BETC. - This devoted group often finds itself exhausted. How do we retain the wonderful volunteer core we have and at the same time add to the connective tissue that makes our congregation vital?

  9. Planning for the future – BETC LDI Team A “Snapshot” of BETC Today What do we do well now? What don't we do well now? + We initiate and manage big programs as needed. - These programs are managed well, but not within a broader institutional framework. We launched a Capital Campaign, a Sanctuary Renovation, new prayer book search, and the expansion of Family Education. We did this work without a clear sense of how these financially big programs fit into our long-range visionary planning.

  10. Planning for the future – BETC LDI Team A “Snapshot” of BETC Today What do we do well now? What don't we do well now? + We manage financial issues as they arise. - We do not have an institutional blueprint or vision to help us determine how to best prioritize our limited financial resources. Staff contracts, yearly budgets, incremental spending requests are managed well as they come up. Our budget has increased to over $1 million and our financial priorities can no longer be managed on an “as they arise” basis. With an increased budget and the explosion of our programs, we may need to make substantive financial and programmatic choices in the near future. Faced with choices and a deficit budget we need a game plan based on a vision.

  11. Planning for the future – BETC LDI Team A “Snapshot” of BETC Today What do we do well now? What don't we do well now? + We have many important stories to tell, information to share and programs to promote. - We are not communicating efficiently or thoroughly We have a website, emails, bulletins, flyers, mailings of all kinds, but we are not getting our information across in a way that is clear, consistent and effective. Our programs overlap and tap shared resources, but our committee chairs don’t always have a complete picture of these connections. We have to communicate across committees, to new members, to the congregation overall, to potential members, just to name a few key audiences.

  12. Planning for the future – BETC LDI Team A “Snapshot” of BETC Today What do we do well now? What don't we do well now? + We are a Spiritual Community. - Do we have a cohesive plan for embracing the different paths our members are taking on their individual spiritual journeys? As a holy community, how do we create a sense of a shared spiritual journey while also offering individual members support for their individual sacred paths?

  13. Planning for the future – BETC LDI Team Strategic Planning Our Missionis the purpose for which our organization exists. Our Vision is a detailed picture of our idealized self in the future. Our Strategic Plan will include a concrete plan of actionsto bring us from our mission toward our vision. Our Strategic Plan will provide a spiritual and organizational road map: It will help guide future board and congregational decision-making It will help us determine and prioritize our shared institutional and spiritual principles It will further build our community and enhance our spiritual connection to each other
