Let’s Talk… • Language: • Domestic violence related to gender and statistics. • This is a refresher: • Basic information to encourage further awareness and knowledge. • This is not about case work: • But it is about understanding and responding.

Definition A pattern of abusive behaviors…
Introduction • Domestic violence impacts all: • Races, cultures, socio economic classes, professions, religions/faith, family composition, and genders.
Questions… • “Why don’t they just leave?” • “They should just think of the kids!” • “Why didn't’t they tell me?” • “What am I supposed to do? • Isn’t this someone else’s responsibility?”
DV Dynamics • Power • Strength/force exerted or capable of being exerted; • Ability or official capacity to exercise authority; • A person, … having great influence or control over others; • Control • To exercise authoritative or dominating influence over; direct. • To hold in restraint; check. • Authority or ability to manage or direct
DV Statistics • Nationally • One in four women are victims of domestic violence in their lifetimes; • Colorado • In one single day, in 2012, over 430 calls were made to DV hotlines.
Power and Control • Committing domestic violence is intentional. • Physical abuse is only one tactic in a series or variety of behaviors an abuser uses against his/her partner.
