  4. Mission of the NROTC Program • To develop midshipmen morally, mentally, and physically . . . • To imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor, and loyalty . . .

  5. Mission of the NROTC Program • . . . In order to commission college graduates as Naval Officers who • possess a basic professional background • are motivated towards careers in the naval service • have potential for future development in mind and character

Goal of the NROTC Program • To provide NROTC students with: • an understanding of the fundamental concepts of Naval Science • a basic understanding of associated professional knowledge • an appreciation of the requirements for National Security • a strong sense of personal integrity, honor, and individual responsibility

  8. Goal of the NROTC Program • To provide NROTC students with: • an educational background which will allow you to pursue advanced/continuing education in a field of application and interest to the naval service • a high state of physical fitness for the purposes of health and performance

  9. Intent of the NROTC program • To commission officers for the unrestricted line URL. • Surface Warfare • Submarines • Aviation • US Marine Corps • (The Medical, Supply, & Intel Corps will have to wait.)

  10. NROTC Academic Program requirements • Your major • Navy-specified college courses • One year of calculus (I and II) • One year of physics (I and II) • Military history/Nat’l Security Policy • Writing Intensive English courses (6 cr.) • Regional Studies/World Cultures/Religions (3)

NROTC Academic Program requirements • Marine Option Midshipmen • Same Naval Science courses, except • No Calc or Physics req. • Ships Sys I/Engineering, Ships Sys II /Weapons, & Naval Operations and Seamanship – NOT REQ. • Regional Studies/World Cultures/Religions highly recommended but NOT REQ. • Evolution of Warfare • Amphibious Warfare

  13. NROTC Academic Program requirements • Naval Professional Training • Drill Periods • PT • Summer training (cruises) • Other – Sail Team, Drill Team, MEC’s, etc…

  14. NROTC Academic Program requirements • Summer Training Periods • 4 to 8 weeks long • 4-year scholarship winners attend all three • College Program students do NOT attend (unless they win a scholarship)

  15. NROTC Academic Program requirements • Summer Training Periods – Third class summer training • CORTRAMID – All scholarship students - • 4 weeks long • Week of • Surface Warfare • Submarines • Aviation • Marine Corps

  16. NROTC Academic Program requirements • Summer Training Periods –2nd Class Summer Training (Enlisted) - All scholarship students • At-sea training • See life from the enlisted point of view • Marine Options go to Mountain Warfare training

NROTC Academic Program requirements • Summer Training Periods • 1st Class Summer Training (Division Officer) • Similar to 2nd Class cruise, except you wear khakis • Marine Options will attend Bulldog training (in Quantico, VA) instead. • Nurse Corps go to the Naval Hospital • You may request to go on an Aviation, Spec Warfare or Foreign Exchange cruise.

  18. Four-Year NROTC Scholarship • Students are sworn in as Midshipmen, USNR • Navy pays full tuition, required fees, and provides textbooks & uniforms • $250/300/350/400/month stipend • Minimum 4-year active duty requirement upon commissioning

  19. Two-year NROTC Scholarship • Students with at least 2 years remaining are eligible • Must attend the Naval Science Institute (NSI) in Newport, RI over the summer • Same privileges and requirements as for 4-year scholarship

  20. NETC-Controlled Scholarship • Students in the College Program can earn a scholarship if selected by NETC. • Must complete at least one semester in the NROTC unit.

  21. Four-Year College Program • Interested students can become part of NROTC through this program. • You can go the entire 4 years in this program (as long as NETC approves) • During junior and senior years, students receive $350/400/month stipend.

  22. Two-year College Program • Students with at least 2 years remaining at their school are eligible. • Must attend NSI

  23. Pitfalls of the NROTC Program • The Performance Review Board • Purpose: • To address a substandard academic and/or professional performance • Organization: • Chaired by the XO • Typically two unit staff members (LT) • Representative from Dean of Students (sometimes)

  24. Pitfalls of the NROTC Program • The Performance Review Board makes a recommendation to the CO: • Warning • Probation • LOA • Disenrollment

  25. Physical Fitness Requirements • The Navy Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) • Push-Ups and Sit-Ups (2 minutes) • Run (1 1/2 miles), or Swim (500 yards) • BCA- Body Composition (height/weight) • Minimum standards depend on your age, gender • Remedial

  26. Physical Fitness Requirements • Swim Qualifications • You must qualify as 3rd class swimmer by the beginning of your sophomore year • 1st class swim qualification is highest • (Must be 1st class qualified if you want to fly jets during CORTRAMID)

  27. Physical Fitness Requirements • Weight control and Body fat • If you control your body fat, you will • perform better on the PRT • look good in your uniform • feel better about yourself

  28. Physical Fitness Requirements • US Marine Corps Option students • Must meet USMC requirements (obviously).

  32. The NROTC Honor Code • A Midshipman does not • LIE • CHEAT • OR STEAL • Why? • Military organizations MUST be based on absolute trust. Otherwise, lives could be lost! • Take these principles to the fleet!

  33. Some possible test questions • List all of the Naval Science courses that are taught at RPI. • What are the possible consequences of going to a PRB? • Names of the Unit staff members. • Names of the Midshipmen in my chain of command.
