The Bill of Rights • Essential Questions: What is the Bill of Rights? How would it affect you if we did not have the Bill of Rights? We will have to use analytical and creative thinking to solve these questions!
The Bill of Rights • What is the Bill of Rights? 1st 10 amendments/rights that were added to the Constitution • Why were these added? To protect the rights of the American citizens
Amendment 1 • The 1st Amendment guarantees freedom of religion, speech, the press, assembly, and petition. • This means that we all have the right to: • practice any religion we want to • to speak freely • to assemble (meet) • to address the government (petition) • to publish newspapers, TV, radio, Internet (press)
Amendment2 • The 2nd Amendment protects the right to bear arms • This means we have the right to own a gun.
Amendment 3 • The 3rd Amendment says “No soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.” • This means that we cannot be forced to house or quarter soldiers.
Amendment 4 • The 4th Amendment protects the people from unreasonable searches and seizures. • This means that the police must have a warrant to enter our homes. It also means the government cannot take our property, papers, or us, without a valid warrant based on probable cause (good reason).
Amendment 5 • The 5th Amendment protects people from being held for committing a crime unless they are properly indicted, (accused) • You may not be tried twice for the same crime (double jeopardy) • You don’t have to testify against yourself in court. (Self-incrimination)

Group Work!!! • Each group will now have one minute to choose one of the first 5 amendments they want to create a poster for! • Groups will write, draw, and color a poster! • Groups will be required to compose a slogan on their poster! This slogan will be to persuade someone to agree or disagree with the amendment!!! DO NOT WRITE WHICH AMENDMENT YOU ARE DOING ON YOUR POSTER! Amendment 1? Presenting Your Posters! • Each group, one at a time, will come to the front of the room and the reporter of the group will explain their poster and explain their slogan. • If you are at your seat, you are to… Grade each group with a 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 (5 is the best!) Write the amendment and what it does in your journal. If you finish early, see if you can come up with a different slogan for the groups amendment!
