  1. The Gospel in David’s Last Song2 Samuel 22:1-51; Psalm 18 • The God of grace in the New Testament is the God of grace all through the Old Testament as well. • King Asa – Solomon’s great grandson • 2 Chronicles 14:2 (NIV) 2 Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God. • Jehoshaphat – Asa’s son • 2 Chronicles 20:32–33 (NIV) 32 He [Jehoshaphat] walked in the ways of his father Asa and did not stray from them; he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. 33 The high places, however, were not removed, and the people still had not set their hearts on the God of their fathers.

  2. This describes grace. • God looks past our failures, our imperfect personalities • God looks at our heart. • I also should show grace to other people. • God’s grace was also clearly demonstrated in the life of David “a man after God’s own heart”

  3. God, in his grace offered forgiveness and deliverance because David turned from his sin in humility and repentance and put his faith and trust in the living God. • This is the gospel message! • We find the gospel all through the Old Testament as well.

  4. 1. Realizing God’s Nature • The gospel message must begin with a clear understanding of who God is. • 2 Samuel 22:2-3 (NIV) “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; 3 my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior— • Ultimately God is a Saviour.

  5. Understanding the good news begins with knowing and understanding who God is: • Hebrews 11:6 (NIV) 6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. • God is a holy; God is perfect • He will judge everything else by his holy, perfect standard.

  6. 2. Recognizing Our Condition • David recognizes his own condition. • 2 Samuel 22:5-6 (NIV) - 5 “The waves of death swirled about me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me. 6 The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me. • Psalm 51:3–4 (NIV) - 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.

  7. The gospel  we need to realize that death is the penalty for sin. • Not physical death – but spiritual death. • Romans 3:23 (NIV) 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, • Romans 6:23 (NIV) 23 For the wages of sin is death. • Ephesians 2:1–2 (NIV) - As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

  8. 3. Repenting from Our Sin • 2 Samuel 22:7 (NIV) 7 In my distress I called to the Lord; I called out to my God. • In sinful condition we have nowhere else to turn but to God. • People try to fix the problem of sin their own way. • Getting to heaven is not about what WE do  it’s all about what GOD has DONE through Jesus Christ! • Ephesians 2:8–9 (NLT) 8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.

  9. Repentance has always been a necessary part of the gospel: • Ezekiel 18:30–32 (NIV) 30 …Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. 31 Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit… 32 For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!

  10. 4. Receiving God’s Deliverance • David describes the awesome power of God (v.8-16) • 2 Samuel 22:17-18,20 (NIV) 17 “He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. 18 He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me… 20 he rescued me because he delighted in me.

  11. God rescued us through Jesus Christ. • 1 John 4:10 (NIV) 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. • 1 John 4:14 (NIV) - 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.

  12. In order for us to be rescued we need to be willing to accept God’s help. • We need to receive his help through faith. • Romans 10:9–13 (NIV) 9 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved…13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

  13. 5. Responding Through Service & Worship • David describes what life is like after we are rescued by God (v.21-51) • David describes this life of obedience. • 2 Samuel 22:21-23 (NIV) “The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me. For I have kept the ways of the Lord; I have not done evil by turning from my God. All his laws are before me; I have not turned away from his decrees.

  14. The result of God’s grace and forgiveness for us through Christ. • God sees us as righteous because Jesus has covered up our sinfulness with his perfect righteousness. • 2 Corinthians 5:21 (NIV) – 21 God made him [Jesus] who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

  15. God equips us to serve him (v.29-37) • He is a lamp to light our dark path • He is a help to advance against those who oppose us • He enables us to stand • He trains our hand • He broadens our path to keep us safe.

  16. God doesn’t save us just to populate heaven but to equips us to serve him: • Ephesians 2:10 (NIV84) 10 For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. • In response to everything God has done for us we worship him (v.47-51)

  17. David says, “I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations!” • We declare this great news of God’s deliverance to the nations - to other people. • the witnessing we are called to do that follows our salvation. • Become a Matthew - introduce others to Jesus. • Will you accept his free gift of deliverance today? • Recognize that God has equipped you for doing something important for his kingdom • Worship him by offering him praise everyday for what he has done for you.
