  2. What was internment? • U.S. government’s decision to relocate and intern (keep within government boundaries) Japanese immigrants and Nisei, or U.S. citizens of Japanese descent. • Camps were on the west coast, mostly in CA, OR, WA

  3. Why? • Pearl Harbor caused fear of Japanese spies • Local governments put pressure on Roosevelt to relocate Japanese/Japanese Americans to inland areas • Some argued that relocation would protect Japanese/Japanese Americans from violence and acts of revenge

  4. What established internment? • February 19, 1942, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066; ordered relocation of Japanese immigrants and American citizens of Japanese decent. • Affected 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry • More than two-thirds of those were citizens, and none had ever shown any disloyalty.
