Ivan Pavlov By Chris Downey
Background • Pavlov was born in Ryazan, Russia in 1848. • His father was a priest, and Ivan originally entered the Seminary, but he decided he wanted to learn natural science instead. • Pavlov was actually trained and had his degree in physiology.
Theory: Pavlov’s Dogs • Ivan discovered that he could cause an unconditioned response (UR) with a conditioned stimulus (CS). • Dogs will naturally salivate when they have food in their mouth, the food being the unconditioned stimulus (US) and the salivating being the UR.
Theory cont. • Pavlov trained the dogs to expect food right after they heard a metronome, thus the dogs would start to salivate in response to the metronome. • The CS (the metronome) thus caused the UR of the dogs salivating.
