Good to know…. • The United States helped Western Europe reconstruct (or rebuild) after World War II • The Soviet Union helped Eastern Europe reconstruct after World War II • Western and Eastern Europe look very different because of who supported them after WWII. • The Soviet Union officially ends in 1991.

  4. Pre-Reading • Satellite State: Term used for a country that was previously independent but is currently under heavy political, economic, and military influence or control by another country. • (The Soviet Union used its “satellite states” in Eastern Europe as a “buffer zone” or boundary between itself and the enemy (which was the US and Western Europe)

  5. Pre-Reading • Marshall Plan: American program that gave economic support to Western Europe to prevent the spread of Soviet Communism. • North Atlantic Treaty Organization: Started as a military alliance with U.S., Canada, and 14 European countries to discourage an attack by the Soviet Union. Today, NATO provides security and intervenes in regional conflicts when needed

  6. Pre-Reading • Warsaw Pact: 1955 - The Soviet response to the creation of NATO consisting of the Soviet Union and its six satellite countries in Eastern Europe, no longer exists • (East Germany • Poland • Hungary • Czechoslovakia • Bulgaria • Romania)

  7. Pre-Reading • Berlin Wall- A barrier constructed starting on August 13, 1961, that completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and East Berlin. Fell on Nov. 9, 1989. It symbolizes the end of communism in Europe.

  8. Pre Reading • Microcosm: something (such as a place or an event) that is seen as a small version of something much larger • The Berlin Wall represents the Cold war- East vs. West, Soviets vs. U.S., Communism vs. Democracy
