Berlin • Split in fours (then combined into two) after WWII • East is Communists and West is Democratic • Berlin Blockade and Airlift (1948) • Soviets blockaded Berlin • US and Great Britain respond by airlifting supplies into Berlin and avoiding the blockade on the ground • Berlin Wall (1961) • German citizens in East Berlin kept leaving to go to the West • Wall was built to keep people in East Berlinand keep them from leaving Trouble With Berlin

Korea Vietnam 38th parallel North is communist South is democratic North invaded South UN responds with military force US sends majority of troops Korea remained split Split in two Communists vs democratic North invades South UN votes to use military action US once again the leading military force US withdrawals from war Vietnam falls to communism Proxy Wars

Fidel Castro • Overthrows Cuban govt and sets up a communist country • Bay of Pigs • US tried to stage an overthrow of Castro but it’s a complete failure • Cuban Missile Crisis (1962) – 13 days! • Castro allows Soviet Union to install missile launch pads in Cuba • The missiles could attack multiple places throughout the US • US responds with a naval blockade • Most intense time of the Cold War – thought it would be nuclear war for sure • Soviet Union backs down and turns around Oh Cuba!

Arms Race • Which country can create the biggest, best, and newest nuclear weapons • Spend money on military • Emphasis on science and technology • Space Race • Compete to get into space first • Sputnik – satellite in space by USSR – US panics because could be used for missiles and shows the US is behind • NASA created and US puts man on moon in 1969 • Olympics • Medals show strength Game On!
