  1. “That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God” 1 Corinthians 2:5

  2. Is Jesus the Son of God? • Is Jesus the Son of God? • If yes, what is your proof? • If no, why not?

  3. Is Jesus the Son of God? Examining the Claims of Jesus & His Disciples • If Jesus is not the Son of God, He cannot be regarded as a good man, a prophet or a great moral teacher. He is either Lord, Liar or Lunatic? As C.S. Lewis said: “A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said, would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg – or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a mad man or something worse.”

  4. Is Jesus the Son of God? Examining the Claims of Jesus & His Disciples • The identity claimed by an individual serves as evidence and as a basis for further investigation. • The best way to find out a person’s identity is to ask him. • We accept a person’s own testimony in most cases. • Once a claim has been made, further evidence can be presented if needed. • In John 8:14, Jesus said, "Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going.” • Jesus’ claim to be God’s Son carries weight by itself. • In later lessons we will examine additional evidence to support His claim.

  5. Is Jesus the Son of God? Examining the Claims of Jesus & His Disciples • A person’s identity is established not just by their name, but by their relationship to others, their home residence, their age, their activities and their character. • A man named John Smith can further identify himself by giving the name of his father, his home address, his place of employment, and descriptions of his character.

  7. • Jesus makes His claim in all of these ways! • Whose Son is He? • How old is He? • Where is His home or permanent residence? • Who does He work for or with? • How is His moral character described?

  8. Is Jesus the Son of God? Jesus Claimed… • Unity and equality with God (John 5:17-18; 10:30; 14:8-9). • To be God’s Son (Matt. 26:63-64; John 9:35-37; 10:35-36) • To have existed with God eternally (John 5:17; 17:5, 24). • To have come from heaven (John 3:13; 6:38, 62; 7:28-29; 8:23) • To be worthy of worship (John 9:38; Matt. 8:2; 14:33). • To be sinless (John 8:46, 29). • That His death would enable men to receive the remission of their sins (Matt. 26:28; Luke 24:46-47). • That He and His words will judge the world (John 5:25-27; 12:48).

  9. Is Jesus the Son of God? The Testimony of Jesus’ Disciples • An individual’s identity can be verified by witnesses who know him. • This sort of evidence is relied upon regularly in our justice system to identify both criminals and corpses. • Jesus lived among men and was closely associated with them. Their testimony as to Jesus’ identity carries considerable weight.

  10. Is Jesus the Son of God? Jesus’ Disciples Claimed… • That Jesus was one with God and equal to God (Philippians 2:6; Colossians 1:15, 19; 2:9). • That Jesus is the Son of God (Matthew 16:15-16; 2 Peter 1:17-18; Acts 9:20; John 1:14; 1 John 5:20). • That Jesus existed eternally with God (John 1:1, 18). • That Jesus came from heaven (1 Corinthians 15:47). • That He was worthy of worship (Matthew 14:33; 28:17). • That Jesus was sinless (1 Peter 2:22; 1:19; Heb. 4:15). • That through Jesus, men could receive remission of sins (Acts 2:38; 13:38; Ephesians 1:7; Colossians 1:14). • That Jesus and His words will judge the world (Acts 17:31; 2 Corinthians 5:10; Romans 2:16).

  11. Is Jesus the Son of God? An Important Claim to the Jews • To the Jews, perhaps the most significant claim concerning Jesus’ identity was that He is the Messiah or Christ (John 1:41; Luke 9:20). • This claim is backed up by… • Jesus’ lineage (2 Samuel 7:12-13; Luke 1:32) • The place of His birth (Matthew 2:4-6) • Many other Messianic prophecies He fulfilled, as we will study in a later lesson.

  12. Is Jesus the Son of God? • Truthful? Creditable witness? • Jesus’ claims • Jesus’ disciples claims • The Messiah • Lineage • Place of Birth
