  16. RATIONALIZATION making excuses or justifying your behavior • Ex: You don’t study for a test because you want to hang out with your friends • (and you think you’ll pass the test anyway)

  17. DAYDREAMING Imagining pleasant things/memories to distract yourself from unpleasant reality

  18. PROJECTION seeing your faults in someone else • ex: you receive a test back and didn’t make a very good score… • you say to your friend “you didn’t do very well on the Test either…”

  19. IDEALIZATION Copying someone you admire because you cannot accept yourself

  20. DISPLACEMENT Transfer of negative feelings from one person to another Ex: mad at your parents – take it out on sibling/friend

  21. SUBLIMATION Redirecting negativity into positive behavior Ex: mad – go exercise
