  1. Testing MWPCs at Fermilab Test Beam Facility Ewa Skup 11/5/2012

  2. Fenker Chambers We are using multiwire proportional chambers designed by Howard Fenker in 1983 Ewa Skup

  3. MPWC layout details “Y” Sense Plane “X” Sense Plane cathode Aluminum foil window cathodes X and Y sense planes, made using 10 microns diameter AuWwire are installed between three high voltage cathodes made with 12.5 microns Al foils. A set of 12 microns Al foils complete the assembly. Aluminum foil window Gas Port Locating Pin Clamping Bolt Aluminum Frame To Electronics G10 Spacers Ewa Skup

  4. Chamber readout and power(to be replaced by new system) Ewa Skup

  5. Amplifier CardNANO N-277 Power and Threshold Cable Ribbon Cable N-277-C3 Negative inputs Rin = 330 ohms, Positive inputs grounded. FERMILAB standard. Connects to Wire Plane Ewa Skup

  6. The Setup for Efficiency Measurement Source Sr-90 Ewa Skup

  7. Gases Tested • Argon/CO2 80% / 20% • P10 Argon 90% / Methane 10% • P8 Argon 92% / Methane 8% • Argon/Isobutane/Methylal 82% / 15% / 3% Ewa Skup

  8. MWPC Efficiency with Different Gases Ewa Skup

  9. MWPC Efficiency with Different Thresholdswith Argon/Isobutane/Methylal Ewa Skup

  10. Efficiency for different MWPCswith Argon/Isobutane/Methylal Ewa Skup

  11. 4 Fenker Chambers in Cosmic RayTelescope Counter 1 MWPC 1 MWPC 2 Counter 2 MWPC 3 MWPC 4 Counter 3 Iron Plates Counter 4 Ewa Skup

  12. Signals from 4 MWPCs Ewa Skup

  13. FTBF Cosmic Ray Telescope - First DataDAQ - Geoff Savage, Plots – Doug Jensen Wire Hits after event building All Wire Hits Ewa Skup

  14. Some information about the run: • 149 events in the sample • 129 events with tracks • 134 tracks,   some events had more than 1 track • 83 tracks were 4 hit tracks • 51 tracks were 3  hit tracks • The analysis program searched for 4 point, then 3 point tracks.   • Each track is made up of unique chamber hits. Ewa Skup

  15. Hits in planes X1-X4 Hits at modules 1-4 Shows all wires in X1 plane Ewa Skup

  16. FTBF Cosmic Ray Tracks Chamber hits by tracks Distance of x2(x3) from x1-x4 line Ewa Skup

  17. Conclusions • Gas for MWPC was chosen - Argon/Isobutane/Methalyl • We have a working test setup, hardware (4 chamber system) and software (currently CAMAC readout ) Next: - Continue working on 4 chamber system grounding issues, alignment, include the range stack to get higher momentum tracks, look at the multiple scattering vs momentum - Make FenkerChamber operate with a new Sten Hansen preamp board. - Develop the readout system for the new board. Ewa Skup

  18. Extra plots Chamber hits by tracks (Y planes) Distance of y2(y3) from y1-y4 line Ewa Skup
