The Resident Assistant (RA) and Multicultural Assistant (MA) positions at K-State provide a unique opportunity for student leadership within the Housing and Dining Services. RAs and MAs are vital in building community, promoting academic success, and fostering relationships among residents. Responsibilities include conducting one-on-one meetings, organizing programs, and enforcing policies. Training is mandatory, and staff are compensated with a combination of room, board, and a bi-weekly stipend. Must be a full-time student and meet specific academic requirements to apply.

H&D Goals • Residence halls are a place for more than eating and sleeping • someone to meet (new people from different places) • something to do (involvement) • something to be (academics - students) • Halls are part of the academic community • programs and initiatives • one-on-one contact with students regarding academics
Position Description • Training • Required to attend all training sessions prior to fall and spring semesters • approximately 2 weeks before halls open in fall • approximately two to three days before halls open in spring
Position Description (cont.) • Community and Relationship Building • One of the most important aspects of the position • This is foundational to everything that a RA / MA does • Student success, development, programming, policy enforcement • Connecting residents to appropriate resources on-campus • Continual follow-up with residents after you have directed them to resources

Position Description (cont.) • Duty • RA & MA staff serve regular duty rotation for hall or complex • Building rounds to check for safety concerns and allow for interaction between staff and residents • Remain in the building or complex in case of emergencies • Confront all behavior that does not conform to Housing and Dining Services policies • Respond to all emergencies assisting residents and emergency personnel • Daily Curfew: 2:30am • Time Away is granted monthly • There will be closed weekends where you have to be on campus.

Remuneration (pay) • Room & Board • Free room provided • YOU WILL HAVE A ROOMMATE whether you choose them or you go potluck • Free board when dining centers are open to general student population • Bi-Weekly Stipend for 2011-2012 • $36.05 for RA1 (responsible for one wing) • $41.20 for RA2 (responsible for two wings) • $41.20 for MA (responsible for building or complex) • $35/week for a roommate • Free Ethernet/Wireless connection • Convenient Parking Spots
Position Requirements • Must have a valid Social Security number and be eligible to be employed in the United States • Full-Time Student Status (12 hours for undergraduates / nine hours for graduate students) • If in the last semester of senior year, six hours are necessary • One full year of group living experience • Cumulative grade point average of 2.5 • In good academic standing with individual college • Cannot hold concurrent HGB/ARH positions
Position Requirements (cont.) • May work/volunteer/be involved in up to 12 hours outside of the hall if approved by RLC and ADRL (Nick Lander) • No student teaching will be allowed while employed as an RA or MA • Financial Aid intent is to see if students qualify for work study and is not considered in the hiring process • Be aware that RA/MA position might effect one’s Financial Aid package • Commitment: Position is for entire academic year

EDCEP 311 • Expected to enroll in a Housing and Dining section of EDCEP 311 for the Spring semester. • Course #11405 Tuesday/Thursday 9:30-10:45am OR #11406Tuesday/Thursday 2:30-3:45pm. • Course will begin March 1, 2011. • Contact your Residence Life Coordinator if you have difficulties enrolling in section • Fall enrollment is only option if you can’t take it in Spring This has to be approved by supervisor
Residence Life Expectations • Relationships: RAs/MAs should not engage in romantic relationships with residents of their hall(s) • Keys: Misuse of keys, including K-State IDs and Temp Key Cards may result in termination • Alcohol: RAs/MAs are expected to consider carefully their use of alcohol as well as the perception that may occur when being present at a location where alcohol is served • RAs/MAs under 21: Should not drink alcohol as per Kansas State Law • RAs/MAs 21 and over: RAs/MAs must abide by the policies of the K-State Association of Residence Halls as stated in the Residence Hall Handbook
Residence Life Expectations, cont. • Drugs – Use of drugs, both illegal drugs as well as misuse of prescription drugs may result in termination of the RA/MA • Transportation of residents – RAs/MAs are not permitted to transport residents under any emergency circumstance
Residence Life Expectations (cont.)Outside Involvement • Hours of outside involvement: RAs/MAs are expected to make their RA/MA position a top priority • RAs/MAs may have 12 hours of outside involvement which includes a second job and leadership in student groups • Jobs are limited to work related to a major or an on-campus position • All involvement and jobs should be approved by the RLC of the RA/MA. • Jobs also require approval of the Assistant Director of Residence Life (Nick Lander)
Application Process • Entirely electronic via web portal • Will be given access to electronic application the next business day after information session is held • Must fill this out before you can advance to the next step • Due Friday, December 10 at 3 pm
Application Process (cont.)References • Will submit name and e-mail address for two references • If no e-mail address, you must contact Audrey Sinn (alsinn@k-state.edu or 395-5757) to have a paper form mailed to that reference • Reference will be sent an e-mail with a link to form to fill out • On-campus applicants • Your Resident Assistant or Multicultural Assistant must serve as one reference • You must also supply one reference from either a faculty member, staff member or former employer • RLCs and ARLCs cannot serve as a reference • Off-campus applicants • You must provide two references from either faculty members, staff members or former employers • Reference forms are due the same day as the application: Friday, December 10, 2010 at 3 pm
Application Process (cont.)Essay Questions • Three essay questions • If applying for MA position, will have one additional essay • Can save work as you go to finish at a later date • Be concise, honest and thorough • Word count limit is 2000 characters per essay

Application Process (cont.)Social • The RA/MA Candidate Social will take place January 31, 2011 from 6:00-9:00pm in the lobby of each residence hall • Strong Complex to be held in Van Zile • Informal time for you to talk with current staff • The Social will help you meet all of the RLC’s and ARLC’s
Application Process (cont.)Social • Highly encouraged that you travel to each hall and mingle with Sr. Staff and talk with current RA/MA staff • Applicants are highly encouraged to attend but it is not mandatory • Dress code is jeans and K-State t-shirt
