  1. Process Analysis Fall Semester College Comp 2011

  2. How did you feel When… • You received your driver’s license? • You learned how to tie your shoes in kindergarten? • Advanced to a different level in a videogame? • We spend a great deal of our lives learning and mastering skills. • Milestones in our lives are often linked with mastering skills that allow us to become more independent.

  3. This is process analysis • All of these are examples of the end results of process-analysis. • Process Analysis is a technique that explains the steps or sequence involved in doing something. • It satisfies our need to learn as well as satisfying our curiosity about how the world works. • Examples of process-analysis: self-help books, how-to section on Youtube. What other examples exist in the process-analysis genre? Discuss with those in your row.

For example, have you ever attempted to assemble a futon or a bookshelf with poorly written instructions? • Directional: Step by step instructions to readers showing how they do something. • Informational: when you want readers to understand how something happens even though they won’t follow the steps outlined. Example: how to choose a college.

Which one is directional? How do you know? • Both directional and informational process analysis are often appropriate in problem-solving situations. These are frequently used in college. An example is:

  6. Example essay question • “Because many colleges have changed the eligibility requirements for financial aid, fewer students can depend on loans or scholarships. How can students cope with the rising costs of higher education?” • This question requires you to explain what’s wrong with the current approach before presenting step-by-step solutions. Thus, it is process analysis.
