  1. Wrapping up Modernism and DOTL Postmodernism and Contemporary Collect DOTL & Hand out Ishmael Have a great weekend! Friday April 26, 2013Agenda

  2. On one side of your card: Write ONE paragraph (3-5 sentences) describing the overarching ideas of Modernism (think in terms of MOOD, BELIEFS, and what the people of the time were trying to ACCOMPLISH). • On the other side of your card: Write ONE paragraph describing how DOTL highlights/mirrors these ideas using EXAMPLES from the book (no page #s, just make direct references to events/concepts that were present). Respond to the statement below on your notecard:

  3. Post-Modernism1970s-Present

  4. Post-Modernism • Arose after WWII • Response to/push back toward Modernism and its beliefs • Skepticism toward any representation of reality that claimed to be universal or objective • Focus on the “construction of reality” through language and symbols (create your own meaning) • People give up trying to break traditions (departing from the norm lost its impact when it BECAME the norm)

  5. Modernism Postmodernism • Absolute truths • Fact through logic/observation • Emphasizes logic • Symbols everywhere; concrete (absolute truth, logic) • Reject truth, point out assumptions • Facts created by assumptions • Emphasizes story/journey • Symbols are whatever; abstract (discover, assume)

  6. ContemporaryThen-Later

  7. Contemporary • Happening NOW (still being discovered and created) • We don’t have a definite time when it began, because we are still “in” it and discovering what will distinguish it from Postmodernism; thus, overarching characteristics of 21st Century works can only be hypothesized

  8. Purpose of the Contemporary Unit and Ishmael • To discover what the characteristics of Contemporary literature might be through our study of Ishamel and our personal experiences • Evaluate the text critically to determine the author’s purpose and effectiveness; hone and apply analytical and verbal communication skills • To make us more aware, thoughtful, and present humans

  9. Questions to Focus On • How do we see the important issues of the last century manifesting in this piece of literature? • What does Ishmael identify as the issues within our society?

  10. To try and understand what defines our culture today, create several hash tags that you feel describe the world we live in (we did this at the start of DOTL). They can cover almost anything (think back to the quotes you found at the start of the semester that you felt embodied our society). Write them on the board. #ContemporaryCultureIs…
