  1. What is a logo? The logo is the first impression, of not just who a company is, but how trustworthy it is – and in turn, how much a consumer will open up.

  2. Think of logos like people…….. • We prefer to be called by our names - Jacob, Emily, Tyler - rather than by the confusing and forgettable description of ourselves such as “the guy who always wears pink and has blonde hair”. • In this same way, a logo should not literally describe what the business does but rather identify the business in a way that is recognizable and memorable

  3. A Great Logo

  4. Simple

  5. Memorable

  6. timeless

  7. versatile

  8. appropriate

  9. What do I need to think about when designing a logo? Important to think about…..

  10. 1. Typography • How to choose your font? • You’ll want to see what kind of fonts are common in that industry and what fonts are used by top competitors.

  11. 2. Color • Color is a visual stimulant to the eye. When you think of Starbucks, the color you automatically think of is green. • What about Facebook? Instagram? Twitter? Youtube? McDonalds?

  12. Color Psychology • You don’t make a logo a certain color because of the obvious product, but you choose based on psychology. • Blue, for example, is a favored corporate color because it gives off a calming factor. • McDonalds: Red and Yellow because………

  13. 3. Shape • Squares and circles are commonly used shapes in logo design. Many designs are so simple that they don’t contain elegant drawings or trendy swooshes or cute double meanings. They just stick with the “blue square” principle

  14. The project…. • You will be completing a logo design for a company of your choice. You are asked to follow the design process to complete this project, and use the concepts taught in this PowerPoint to help you come up with your design.

  15. Design Process • Reference: Conduct research into logo designs that have been successful and current styles and trends. • Research: Conduct research focused on the industry itself, on its history, and on its competitors. • Sketching: Develop the logo design concept(s) around the research using thumbnails. • Reflection: Take breaks throughout the design process. This lets your ideas mature and helps you get renewed enthusiasm. Receive feedback. • Presentation: Choose to present only a select few logos to the client. Presenting only the best is recommended. • Final Design: Create the selected logo in Photoshop

  16. Step #1: Reference • Conduct research into logo designs that have been successful and current styles and trends. (At least four different logos and a sentence on why this logo is effective) • **The goal of this is to figure out what you like!

  17. Logo references This logo is effective because……. What I like about this logo is…….. The use of…….in this logo makes it effective because…... What I like about this logo is……..

  18. Step #2: Research • Choose a company that you want to make a logo for. Research the industry itself, on the company’s history, and on its competitors. (At least three facts for each)

  19. Logo Research • Industry • Company History (what are they all about) • Who are the companies competitors and what makes you company unique from them?

  20. Step 3: Sketching (5 different thumbnails)

  21. Step 4: Reflection • Have at least five different students in the classroom, look at your thumbnails, and give feedback on the ones they think are the most effective. Their feedback must be written up on your website under the title “Student Feedback”, along with their name.

  22. Step 5: Presentation • Using the feedback from your classmates, select the two logos you think are your best. • Present them to Mrs. Younggren for final approval. You need to be able to explain to her why you choose those two designs.

  23. Step 6: Final design • You get to go on Photoshop!!
