  1. Material Taken From:Mathematicsfor the international student Mathematical Studies SLMal Coad, Glen Whiffen, John Owen, Robert Haese, Sandra Haese and Mark BruceHaese and Haese Publications, 2004

  2. Objectives • To convert one-dimensional units • To find the perimeter of a closed figure • To convert two-dimensional units • To find the area of a closed figure

  3. Chapter 11 – Section A - Conversion of Units Systems of Measuring • pint • quart • gallon • pound • teaspoon • tablespoon • cup • Metric System • meter • gram • liter • Joule • Newton • Watt • Imperial System • inch • foot • yard • mile • acre • ounce

  4. Converting Units

  5. 1) Convert: 16.73 m to cm 48380 cm to km

  6. 2) Convert 2.3 kg to grams 8 470 000 g to tonnes

  7. Chapter 11 – Section B - Perimeter • The perimeter of a figure is the measure of the distance around its boundary. • The perimeter of a circle is called its circumference. • The formula for circumference is: C = πdor C = 2πr Page 359has formulae for different perimeters

  8. 1) Find the perimeter of: a) b)

  9. 2) Find, to 3 sig figs, the circumference of a circle of: diameter 13.8 meters radius 3.7 meters

  10. 3) Find, to 3 sig figs, the perimeter of:

  11. 4) Find the radius of a circle with circumference 11.7 meters

  12. Area units 1cm2 = 1cm × 1cm = 10 mm × 10 mm = 100 mm2

  13. Units of Area To convert square units, move the decimal twice as far.

  14. Square meters vs. Meters Squared 10 m2 (10 m)2 • an area 2 meters wide by 5 meters long would be 10 square meters, • while 10meters squared means an area of 10 meters by 10 meters. • So 10 meters squared equals 100 square meters.

  15. Convert: 1) 650000 m2 to ha 2) 2.5 m2 to mm2

  16. Homework • 11A.1, pg 357 • #1acegi, 2ab, 4 • 11A.2, pg 358 • #1ace, 2ace, 3 • 11B.1, pg 360 • #1bc, 2bc, 3b, 6, 7, 11 • 11B.2, pg 362 • #1ad, 2ab, 6 • 11C.1, pg 364 • #1acegi
