  1. Chapters 9 and 10 BY Kimberly Fries and Desiree Lesane

  2. Chapter 9 Overview The chapter opens up with Jody’s funeral, Janie describes the funeral as being very elaborate. On the outside Janie wears a stern face to show her mourning, but in the inside Janie is happy because now she feels free. She even burns her head wraps and begins to wear her hair down in a long braid. While Janie is now alone it givers her time to think about the teachings of Nanny, now she thinks that she was wrong.

  3. Overview cont. Janie is enjoying her independence as she continues to run the shop that her and Jody owned. Men from all around Eatonville have begun approaching Janie, they attempt to make her feel as though she needs to be remarried soon. Janie is enjoying her independence too much for her to be thinking about remarrying. As the months go by Janie begins to wear white to signify that men can now approach her. Phoeby tells Janie that the people of the town believe she is moving on too quickly, but she does not care.

  4. Janie’s Changing Identity Jody’s death has given Janie the chance to be independent. Now she can make her own choices and decisions. Janie now can wear her hair down freely without having the worry of Jody telling her to put her hair back up. Janie is more confident and now has the opportunity to run the shop the way she wants to.

  5. Janie’s new role in town Janie is no longer the mayors wife, she is the now the sole owner of the shop and is in charge. Janie is able to give her own voice. Now that Jody has passed Janie is free to talk to the people of the town. She now has her own freedom of speech.

  6. Important Quotes “All things concerning death and burial were said and done. Finish . End. Nevermore. Darkness. Deep hole. Dissolution. Eternity. Weeping and wailing outside. Inside the expensive black folds were resurrection and life.”(Pg. 88) Discuss in your groups how this quote represents the feelings of Janie.

  7. Important Quotes “let’em say whut dey wants tuh, Phoeby. To my thinkin’ mourning oughtn’t tuh last no longer’n grief.” Discuss in your groups how this quote shows the attitude change in Janie.

  8. Chapter 10 Janie works the store on her own and is by herself because everyone else is at a game. A stranger comes in to buy cigarettes and they begin to make small talk, and flirt slightly. He asks to play her in checkers, but must teach her first. The man explains that he always finds a way home, even if it means illegally getting on a train. His name is Vergible “Tea Cake” Woods.

  9. Cont. He pretends to leave but sticks around as people come back from the game. Tea Cake helps her close the store for the night.

  10. Tea Cake’s Arrival Upon his arrival, Janie looks at him and admires his good looks and his body. She is thrilled by him asking her to play checkers because no man as respected her enough to do so. He makes Janie laugh a lot.

  11. Important Quotes Tea Cake! So you sweet as all dat?” She laughed and he gave her a little cut-eye look to get her meaning.“Ah may be guilty. You better try me and see.” Here Janie and Tea Cake are seen flirting. What do you think they’re hinting at?
