  2. The Phoenicians • Phoenicia was located towards the lower half of the Fertile Crescent. • They had little fertile land, so they spent much time trading on the sea. • The Phoenician seaports of Tyre and Sidon became world famous.

  3. Phoenician Trade • They sailed in ships that today would seem small and frail, but their sailors were highly skilled.

  4. Lumber • The Phoenicians had a very important resource—lumber. • The mountains around Phoencia had beautiful forests with lots of huge cedar trees. • Many ancient people used this lumber for building.

  5. Phoenician Culture • They imitated cultures of other people. • Their government resembled that of the Egyptians. • They believed in an afterlife, but their efforts in worship were focused on winning the favor of one of the many gods they worshipped.

  6. The Alphabet • The Phoenicians developed the alphabet that became the model for Western alphabets. • They used writing in their businesses to draw up contracts and record bills. • The English language today is based on the Phoenician alphabet.

  7. The Lydians • The Lydians lived where modern-day Turkey is located. • They were the first people to use coined money. • They began issuing small kidney-bean-shaped pieces of money made out of a mixture of gold and silver. • They developed a money economy.
