  • Duke William of Normandy
  • Led an army of 6,000 across the English Channel in hundreds of ships and defeated the struggling Harold at the BATTLE OF HASTINGS in 1066 AD

  • Appointed sheriffs to police his kingdom
  • Set up The Great Council to help him run the country (this will eventually become the English Parliament…beginnings of democracy!)
