SAP/GL is a non-profit organization established in 1999 to advocate against torture, support survivors, provide counseling, medical treatment, and educational assistance. With 20 volunteers, SAP/GL offers physical and psychosocial treatment in Burundi. The organization focuses on prevention efforts, protection of victims, and integrated care, aiming to address the increasing violence in the Great Lakes region. Their accomplishments include opening medical centers and assisting victims with various programs. Despite challenges like lack of resources and the impact of HIV/AIDS, SAP/GL aims to strengthen women and children, provide gender training, and raise funds for future activities.

Background • SAP/GL is a non profit organisation • Started in 1999 with the support of Jesuit Refugee Services (JRS) to advocate against torture, help and support torture survivors SAP/GL
VISION and MISSION • Vision: - Our vision is to build a world free from torture, being aware of the need to rehabilitate and encourage the support to the victims of torture and their dependents. • Mission: - To identify victims of torture and assess their needs and other information in this regard. SAP/GL
Objectives • To identify victims of torture, gather information on their behalf and assess their needs; • To provide counselling, psychosocial assistance and medical treatment in our own clinic; • To assist them in educational matter, such as vocational or technical training, basic micro business skill training (income generating activities) for their survival. SAP/GL
Structure • SAP/GL has a personnel constituency of 20 volunteer workers: lawyer, social workers, nurses, psychologists and a physician • SAP/GL offers physical, psychosocial treatment and rehabilitation to torture survivors. SAP/GL

PROTECTION/PREVENTION • Efforts on prevention focus mainly on: • - support to victims • - evolution of legislation and policy • - health services and care providers’ training • - educational programmes and campaigns to change attitudes and behaviours. • Advice activities, therapies and support groups are initiatives conceived to alleviate traumas of sexual violence and accelerate the healing process. These types of services have been proved to be useful after the aggressions. SAP/GL
Since different crisis have burst, several regions of the Great Lakes have known a strong increase of sexual and physical violence, particularly directed towards women and teenagers, and girls. Today still, young students from primary and secondary school are sometimes forced to drop out of school to submit to early and/or forced marriage. SAP/GL

TRAINING • Awareness-raising in communities on their comprehension of torture and its consequences • Psychosocial care • Basic training on human rights • Training on income-generating activities SAP/GL
ASSISTANCE TO VICTIMS OF TORTURE • Support to 124 victims of torture in: - Medical assistance - Psychosocial assistance - Orienting 20 cases for legal assistance SAP/GL
AVAILABILITY OF SERVICES • Assistance services to victims of torture are not available everywhere in the country or are situated far from victims’ location • Assistance to victims of torture remains NGO work but there is no clear national policy on rehabilitation of victims of torture in Burundi. SAP/GL
Integrated care for victims • Our approach is holistic: medical, psychological, legal and financial support through support groups. • The care providers consider victims’ needs in order to bring a multidimensional assistance SAP/GL

Assistance to vulnerable women • 1258 women have been supported in micro-projects (agriculture and cattle, business, sewing….) • 1045 were trained in the fight against HIV/AIDS • 600 were trained on their rights and their role within the community • 945 were trained on the AGR • 532 were assisted medically and psychologically • 15 assistants were trained in sociotherapy SAP/GL
ASSISTANCE TO ORPHANS AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN • 750 children were given: - medical assistance - psychological assistance - support in school equipment (furniture et uniforms) SAP/GL
