  1. Thursday 9/20/12 Record the objective on the reflection sheet: I can identify the characteristic intrinsic properties: density and solubility.

  2. What we will do today… Describe two characteristic intrinsic properties of substances: density and solubility.

  3. Density Demo • I have two bottles of coke: one diet and one regular. What will happen when I place them in the water? • They will both float. • They will both sink. • The regular coke will float, but the diet coke will sink. • The diet coke will float, but the regular coke will sink.

  4. Density Demo • Why did the diet coke float and the regular coke sink? • It’s magic or a trick. • Something else is in the bottle besides coke. • The diet coke weighs less than the regular coke. • The regular coke weighs less than the diet coke.

  5. Tasks • 1s get tubs • 2s check to see if all materials are there • 3s bring the beakers of water, oil and sugar over to your table • 4s get paper cups and paper towels from your sinks for spills

  6. Density Use the graduated cylinder to measure out exactly 10 ml of water into a Dixie cup. Use the graduated cylinder to measure out exactly 10 ml of oil into another Dixie cup. Weigh both and record weight (mass) of each. Which substance is denser? How do you know?

  7. Notes: Calculating Density Mass (weight) of the substance volume of the substance Mass (Weight) of the water: 10 grams Volume of the water: 10 ml Or 1 g/ml

  8. Calculate the Density of the Oil Mass (weight) of the substance volume of the substance Mass (Weight) of the oil: ?? grams Volume of the water: 10 ml Or ?? g/ml

  9. Solubility What does “dissolve” mean? How do you know if something has dissolved or not? Add 1 spoon of sugar to the water. Stir. Did the water dissolve? Why or why not? Repeat step 2 with the oil.

  10. Clean Up • 1s check to see if all materials are there , put tubs away • 2s throw away cups, rinse graduated cylinder • 3s put beakers back on counter, wipe counters dry • 4s wipe tables with baby wipe

  11. Extensions Did the side of the penny you used affect the number of drops you were able to place on the penny? What other variables could affect the number of drops you were able to place on the penny?

  12. Exit Task Which is denser: regular or diet coke? How do you know?
