  1. Warm Up: Would you consider the looters in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina to be a representative sample of the disaster victims. Why or why not? Thursday, 9/5

  2. Objective • I will be able to identify varying research methods in sociology and conduct observational research.

  3. Sociological Research • Types • Survey • Secondary Analysis (Precollected Data) • Field Research Question: What is missing (when you compare the list to what other scientists might do)?

  4. Survey Research • People are asked to answer a series of questions. • Population and Samples • The survey must be given to the right people. • A sample is a limited number of cases drawn from the population; it must be representative of the population and randomly drawn.

  5. Selecting Random Samples

  6. Gathering Survey Information • Questionnaires and Interview • Closed-ended questions • Predetermined set of responses • Multiple choice • Easy to tabulate answers • Fail to uncover underlying attitudes • Open Ended Questions • Respondent answers in own words • Difficult to compare with other respondents. • Uncovers underlying attitudes and opinions.

  7. Secondary Analysis(precollected data) • Information someone else has already collected. • Government reports • Company records • Voting lists • Prison records • US Census is one of the most important.

  8. Field Research • Uses qualitative data • Deals with descriptions. • Data can be observed but not measured. • Colors, textures, smells, tastes, appearance, beauty, etc. • Qualitative → Quality • Quantitative • Deals with numbers • Quantitative → Quantity.

  9. Types of Field Research • Case Study • Intensive study of a single group, incident, or community. • Drug use in Chicago; Homelessness in Denver • Participant Observation • The researches becomes a member of the group being studied, with or without letting the group members know.

  10. Vocabulary • Chapter 2, Section 1, 1 -7 • Write the term and then the correct definition. • You will be adding to this and turning it in later, so your ticket out the door is to finish the terms.

  11. Homework • Homework • Teacher Desks
