  1. Transport across the Membrane

  2. Passive Transport • Examples: Diffusion & Facilitative Diffusion • Movement of substances from • an area of higher concentrations • to an area of lesser concentrations. • NO ENERGY is needed!!! Created by S. DaSilva

  3. Passive Transport Created by S. DaSilva

  4. Passive Transport • Example: Osmosis • Movement of water from an area of • high concentrations to an area • of lesser concentrations. NO ENERGY! Created by S. DaSilva

  5. Active Transport • Movement of substances from an area of lesser concentrations to an area of greater concentrations. • Requires ENERGY!

  6. 2 more Examples of Active Transport • Exocytosis Process in which the cell expels large particles (waste matter) out of the cell. Exo = exit • Endocytosis Process in which the cell engulfs large particles (food) into the cell.

  7. Endocytosis & Exocytosis

  8. The cell membrane, using passive and active transport, determines what gets into or out of the cell. The selective flow of material helps the cell to maintain constant internal conditions: called Homeostasis. Homeostasis

  9. a solution is a homogeneous mixture composed of two parts. a common example is a solid, such as salt or sugar, dissolved in water. Solvent- the part that does the dissolving, usually larger. solute- the part that dissolves, usually smaller. Solution

  10. Isotonic(equal) Hypotonic(less) Hypertonic(more) When talking about types of solution, always think about the solution outside the cell. Ask the question does the solution have an equal, more or less solute outside the cell than inside. Iso-Hypo-Hyper????? Then figure out if the there is more or less water outside the cell than inside. Osmosis - water moves from greater to lesser Cells in 3 Types of Solutions

  11. Isotonic literally translates to equal tension. Solute concentration of solution outside the cell is equal to that inside the cell. Iso-Hypo-Hyper????? 3. Water concentration is equal inside & outside the cell 4. No net water movement Isotonic

  12. Solute concentration of solution is higher outside the cell than inside. 2. Hyper = more (think hyperactive). 3. Less water outside the cell than inside. 4. Water moves out of cell into solution・ Cell shrinks Hypertonic Solution 40% salt 60% water 90% salt 10% water 90% water

  13. 1. Hypo = less Think HIPPO = cell gets large Solute concentration of solution is lower than the solute inside the cell. More water outside the cell. 4. Water moves into cell from solution. 5. Cell expands (and may burst) Hypotonic 10%salt 90% water 40% salt 60% water

  14. Below: All cells are composed of 50% NaCl & 50%Water 30 __%NaCL __%Water 50 __%NaCl __%Water ___% NaCl ___%Water 70 70 50 30

  15. Is there more/less solute outside the cell than inside? 2. The solution is ________tonic Is there more/less water outside the cell than inside? 4. Will the water move in or out of the cell? Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic LESS HYPO MORE 10% water IN 90% water

  16. Is there more/less/equal solute outside the cell than inside? The solution is _____ tonic. Is there more/less/same water outside the cell than inside? 8. Will the water move in, out or both of the cell? Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic EQUAL ISO SAME BOTH BACK & FORTH

  17. Is there more/less solute outside the cell than inside? The solution is _____ tonic. 11. Is there more/less water outside the cell than inside? 12. Will the water move in or out of the cell? Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic MORE HYPER 10% SALT LESS 90% water 60% SALT OUT 10% water

  18. Is there more/less solute outside the cell than inside? 14. The solution is _____ tonic Is there more/less water, outside the cell than inside? 16. Will the water move in or out of the cell? Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic MORE HYPER LESS OUT

  19. Is there more/less solute outside the cell than inside? The solution is _____ tonic 19. Where is there more water, outside the cell or inside? 20. Will the water move in or out of the cell? Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic LESS HYPO 90% NaCl OUTSIDE 10% water 10% NaCl 10% water IN

  20. *The produce are misted with a 100% water solution. *Produce consists of 10% salt and 90% water. Is there more/less solute outside the produce than inside? The solution is _____ tonic. 23. Is there more/less water outside the produce than inside? 24. Will the water move in or out of the produce? Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic LESS HYPO MORE IN

  21. The Angelfish is 2% Salt. The Angelfish is in 30% salt water solution. There is less water outside the fish than inside. 25. The solution is ___________tonic 26. Will the water move in or out of the Angelfish? Iso, Hypo or Hypertonic HYPER OUT

  22. The End!!!!Congratulations
