  1. Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources Essential Question – How do resources affect the way that people live and work? Renewable Resources – Natural Resources that “cannot” be used up. Non-Renewable resources- Natural resources that “can” be used up.

  2. Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources What are Natural Resources? Air, water and soil Biological resources - plants and animals Raw materials (minerals, oil, coal and natural gas) Space and land Wind, geothermal (heat from the inside of the earth), tidal and solar energy Natural resources are often classified into renewable, unlimited, and non-renewable resources.

  3. Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources Renewable resources are usually living and therefore can renew themselves assuming they are not killed off or over harvested. Water and soil are non-living.

  4. Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources Unlimited resources- They are all renewable but they do not need regeneration or re-growth. Giant Solar Power farm in Arizona

  5. Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources Wind Farm- Green Mountain Texas

  6. Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources World’s first tidal turbine off the coast of England

  7. Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources Geothermal Plant in Iceland is powered by heat from the Earth’s core

  8. Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources Non-Renewable resources can’t be replaced. When they are used up they are gone. A typical oil platform

  9. Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources There are nearly 4000 oil platforms in this small part of the Gulf of Mexico alone. There are over 40,000 world wide.

  10. Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources Natural gas is an important fuel source and a potent greenhouse gas. Before natural gas can be used as a fuel, it must undergo extensive processing to remove almost all materials other than methane. Gas processing plant in Europe This bus is powered by Natural Gas.

  11. Natural gas production by country (countries in brown and then red have the largest production).

  12. Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources Coal is the means of producing more than half of the United States of America's electricity Surface (Strip) Coal mine in Wyoming

  13. Renewable and Non-Renewable Resources Coal Mine – Bihar, India

  14. Continent by continent We are going to chart the Energy and mineral resources of the world. Turn to page 74. Look at each continent and make tally marks on the chart for each natural resource. When you are done, decide which continent has the most of each resource and write it in the column “Who has most?”
