  1. Warm-up: Use three words to describe Margaret Bourke-White. *Type your answer in the chat. EQ: What qualities of character matter most? I can: support a claim with relevant reasons and evidence (SL.6.1, RI.6.1, RI.6.8)3 use relevant and well-chosen evidence and logical reasoning

  2. Agenda: • We are going to begin working on Our 4-Paragraph Essay • Great introductory paragraphs start with what? • What does your introduction paragraph need to include? • What is the paragraph layout?

  3. Informative Essay: An Informative Essay educates your reader on a topic. You are not trying to present an opinion or persuade your reader. You are informing or educating the reader. Similar to the last essay: Intro paragraph, 2 body paragraphs, conclusion paragraph Your essay MUST include TEXT EVIDENCE!

  4. Intro Let’s take a closer look: HOOK Example: Is fruit really the answer we have been looking for? Fruit is tasty and good for your health. “Apples” is a book about a healthy fruit, written by Sarah Gomez.Similarly, a poem, “Oranges”, written by Tai Minus gives us evidence of health and energy. Overall, both fruits are important examples of how fruit is good for your health.

Essay Layout: Prompt: Donna O’Meara of “Donna O’Meara: Volcano Lady” and Margaret Bourke-White of “Margaret Bourke-White: Fearless Photographer” were both motivated to do something other people saw as impossible. They refused to be manipulated into one way of thinking or living. Write an informative essay explaining what drives both women to respond, take action, or make a decision when there were no guidelines to help them. Justify your response by citing and explaining text evidence from both articles. Have students complete an organizer to gather supporting details for their response, which will be drafted in the next lesson seed. Introduction: Hook, Background information: Mention both texts (include author and title), These statement/Claim Body 1: Donna O’Meara of “Donna O’Meara: Volcano Lady” Body 2: Margaret Bourke-White of “Margaret Bourke-White: Fearless Photographer” Conclusion: Restate the claim/thesis statement, add insight or real-world connection

  6. Reminders: Do: Make sure everything is BLACK,12 font, and double space. (But, not double-double between paragraphs.) Make sure you have no words underlined in red or blue Make sure you change your font to Times New Roman 12 pt Make sure you have avoided contractions - spell do not, cannot, is not, are not, did not, (Do not use can’t don’t, wasn’t, etc.). Write the full name or ONLY the last name of the subjects. Do Not: Write anything like, “In the text, it says…” Write, “In conclusion..” Use the first name only. Use contractions. Spell: is not, are not, did not, had not, etc.
