  1. 6th Grade Language Arts Review Book • We are almost at the end of the year but we still have the End of Grade Test that we need to pass! • To help us prepare for the End of Grade Test in Language Arts we are going to create a review book of all the main topics we have learned about this year. • However, before we start reviewing we need to create our book first!

  2. 6th Grade Language Arts Review Book • Today we are going to make our book, write our title on the cover, and decorate the cover of the book • Title: 6thGrade Language Arts Review Book • After you are finished writing the title on your book I would like for you to take 10 minutes and decorate your cover • When decorating think about these things…

  3. 6th Grade Language Arts Review Book • On the first white page in your book neatly write the title Table of Contents • Neatly write the page numbers on your book in the bottom right corner (skip the Table of Contents!) • Pgs. 1-15 • On page 1 write the title Test Taking Strategies

Poetry & Figurative Language • What is poetry? • Poetry is literature that uses a few words that tell about ideas, feelings, and paints a picture in the reader’s mind • What is a stanza? • A stanza is a group of lines in a poem • What is the rhyme scheme? • Rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhyme throughout a poem • What is the refrain? • The refrain is a word, phrase, or line that is repeated throughout a poem

  5. Poetry & Figurative Language • What is a simile? • The girl was as mean as a witch. • What is a metaphor? • The girl is a witch. • What is imagery? • The cold sweet soda tingled my throat as I gulped it down. • What is onomatopoeia? • The bee buzzed as it flew past my ear.

  6. Poetry & Figurative Language • What is personification? • The clouds were crying for the entire day. • What is a hyperbole? • There must have been one thousand people in the bathroom. The lines were horrible! • What is alliteration? • Bob bought ten blue bowling balls. • What is an idiom? • It is raining cats and dogs outside today.

Poetry & Figurative Language • You are going work in your groups answering the following worksheets with figurative devices. • You will follow the instructions that are listed for you on the handout provided. • Once you are finished with the review, choose a type of poem that we have gone over in class, and write a rough draft of it, and publish your final draft into your review book on pg.3.

Elements of Fiction p.5 • What are our key elements of fiction? • Setting- time and place • Narrator- person who is telling the story • Plot- the series of events in the story • Foreshadowing- hint about what happens next • Climax- most exciting part of the story • Conflict- a problem in the story • Theme- lesson, or moral, of the story • 1st Person P.O.V.- narrator is in the story (I, we) • 3rd Person P.O.V.- narrator is outside the story • (he, she, they)

  9. Elements of Fiction • On page , I want you to create a fictional comic strip about saving an animal (plot) p.6 • In your comic strip there must be a clear setting, protagonist, antagonist, conflict, and conclusion. • Your comic strip should be at least 6 frames and have text bubbles

  10. Mood & Tone p.7 • What is mood? • The overall feeling that a story produces in the reader. How it makes YOU feel! • What is tone? • The writer’s attitude towards his audience. • Example: • If the writer creates a humorous tone then it will put the reader in a happy, or funny, mood.

Author’s Purpose p.10 • What isauthor’s purpose? • Author’s purposeis the main reason the author writes a story. • The three main purposes that many authors write are to… • Persuade- try to get you to do something • Inform- facts, or true information • Entertain- fiction, poetry, nonfiction • An author can have more than one purpose for writing a story!

  14. Author’s Purpose p.11 • On the second half of your page I want you to write a letter of advice to a future sixth grader. In this letter you need to give them advice on what to expect of middle school, how it is different from elementary school, and things they should know to help them adjust to a new school. You must include all three examples of author’s purpose. Be sure to highlight your three examples. Your letter needs to be at least ¾ page – 1 full page in length. It also needs an appropriate greeting and closing. Write a ROUGH DRAFT on notebook paper before writing in your Review Book!

Compare & Contrast p.12 • What does it mean to compare? • When you compare something you examine two or more things and determine what is similar • What does it mean to contrast? • When you contrast something you examine two or more things and determine what is different • Remember: when comparing and contrasting two items it is best to use a Venn diagram!

  17. Inference p.14 • What is inference? • a logical guess about information not directly stated in the text. It is based on information the text gives and your prior knowledge, or what you already know.

  18. Inference • You will be given a sheet of events. Based off of the context clues and your prior knowledge, you will need to determine what caused the event. You will cut out the events and then paste your answers together. • ex. The waves were rough today. • A storm is coming.

  19. Symbolism p.15 • What is a symbol? • A symbol is something (picture, sound) that represents something else. • What is symbolism? • Symbolism is used to provide meaning to the writing beyond what is actually being described

  20. Symbolism • On the second half of your page you are going to draw a symbol that represents you. • Your symbol must NOT have any words on it. Just a picture. • After drawing your symbol, you will write one complete paragraph explaining why this symbol best represents you.

Fact vs. Opinion p.16 • What is a fact? • A fact is information that can be proved • Come up with 8 examples of facts about school with a partner. • What is an opinion? • An opinion is a person’s judgment or belief about something • Come up with 8 examples of opinions about school with a partner.

  22. Fact vs. Opinion p.17 • Pick 1 of your facts about school and draw an illustration to represent your fact. • Pick 1 of your opinions about school and draw an illustration to represent your opinion. • Use colored pencils, crayons, or markers.

  23. Problem/Solution p.18 • What is a problem? • a conflict or issue • What is a solution? • how the conflict or issue is resolved.

  24. Problem/Solution p.19 • Southeast Middle School has just been awarded $10,000. Ms. Gentry does not know how to use the money. In a well-written paragraph, decide how the money should be spent, as well as why the money should be spent in that way. • After you finish your paragraph, draw a picture that symbolizes your solution.
