Integration of Zoological Institute Data Publishing: A Global Initiative

This project highlights the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences' efforts in integrating its taxonomic databases and publishing its data globally. The project includes the development of the ZOOCOD data standard, client-server database management system, and universal web interface. It also showcases various online data publishing projects such as ArcCoML, EcoAnt, and HerpNet. Additionally, it outlines the steps taken for digitizing and georeferencing specimens, as well as future plans for IPT deployment and collaboration with Komarov Botanical Institute.

  1. Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences —first steps in global data publishing integration Roman Khalikov Leading Engineer of the IT DepartmentZoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Saint Petersburgroman.khalikov@zin.ru

  2. ZIN Taxonomic Databases: 30 YearsBackground ▪ ZOOCOD —the data standard for taxonomic tables creation and representation of multilevel hierarchies in relation databases ▪Client-server database management system (MS SQL Server — server side) and universal web-interface (client side — ASP, cross-platform script language JavaScript, AJAX) ▪ZooDiv taxonomic classifier — the kernel of all IT zoological projects at the Zoological Institute

  3. United Classifier and On-line Data Publishing ▪ZooDiv—All-Russian Information Storage and Retrieval Biodiversity System131730 taxonomic records of 41 rankshttp://www.zin.ru/ZooDiv/animals.asp ▪ArcCoML—Arctic Census of Marine Lifehttp://www.zin.ru/projects/arccoml/rus/index.html ▪EcoAnt—Census of Antarctic Marine Lifehttp://www.zin.ru/projects/ecoant/index.html ▪HerpNethttp://www.herpnet.org

  4. Statement of work: “ZIN will be extensively involvedin this project. They will be contributing 22000 records of amphibian specimens to GBIF and HerpNET by making these available through a provider at their institution. They will be digitizing and georeferencing all specimens that funds will allow, using a standard database format and using BioGeomancer to georeference.” 2006: GBIF Seed Money

  5. 2006: Key Steps of the Project ▪ Digitalizationof ZIN collection catalog records ▪Latinization of specimens localities ▪Georeferencing of specimens localities ▪Georeferenced data verification by MVZ staff ▪Georeferenced data integration into ZIN database to make available both for internal use and for theHerpNET on-line distributed information network by means of dedicated DiGIR-provider server(still works… :)

  6. 2015: Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR) Grant ▪ Digitizing of ZIN research collections within the framework of RFBR №15-29-02457 «The collections of the Zoological Institute as an important tool and information basis of fundamental biological research» (project leader Dr. Ananjeva N.B.) ▪ZIN collections — > 60 million of storage units ▪ The first phase — several tens of thousands of type specimens, 8 model groups of collections (Pogonophora, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Ophiuroidea,Siphonaptera, Amphibia, Reptilia, Mammalia) ▪ZIN Research Collections portalhttp://www.zin.ru/collections/

  7. 2015: GBIF Data Publishing — DiGIR + IPT ▪ GBIF IPT Deploymenthttp://ipt.zin.ru:8080/ipt/ ▪Amphibian specimens (DiGIR installation) http://www.gbif.org/dataset/7e34ea34-f762-11e1 -a439-00145eb45e9a ▪Ophiuroidea collections of the Zoological Institute Russian Academy of Sciences (IPT installation) http://www.gbif.org/dataset/98333cb6-6c15-4add -aa0e-b322bf1500ba

  8. 2016: Future Plans ▪IPT debug and improvement expectation — problem with dataset contacts order should be fixed ▪Several occurrence datasets for different taxonomic groups ▪Sample-based dataset for testing purposes ▪Komarov Botanical Institute RAS endorsement and its registration as a publisher within ZIN IPT
