  1. Roman Numerals By Vicky Roscoe 7ND

  2. Roman Numerals are the only number system used by Romans and ancient Europeans as far as we know today. Roman numerals are part of the ancient Roman number system that remains in use today. The history of Roman numerals dates back to 1st millennium BC when they were used to record numbers in stone, art and coins. What are Roman Numerals?

  3. The way we translate roman numerals is easy. On the next slide is a chart to show the translation all the main numbers are written in red. The numbers are easy to translate to start off with and get more complicated towards the end. Translation

  4. Translation 2 If a letter had a line over it it meant to times by 1,000 An easy way to translate it is think... C = 100, Like C in centimetres M = 1,000 Like M in millilitres I = 1 Like....1 To remember the sequence of the bigger numbers think LCD L=50 C=100 D=500 E.G. X= 10 X = 10,000

  5. Where can we find them? Clocks & watches Jewellery Sundials Wars e.g. WWII Monarchies e.g. Henry the VIII Big Ben

  6. How were Roman Maths calculations preformed? • There was no zero in roman numerals which made making correct math's calculations near impossible. • Math's calculations were pretty much the same as now e.g. • X+I = XI • M-I= IM

  7. Dates How are Dates written? Lets start off with 15th 15= XV Next 5th May 5=V So lets put that together XV-V Last of all 2009 2000= MM, 9=IX Together MMIX Let’s put it all together XV-V-MMIX Easy! • For Example:- • II-IV -MMX • 2-4-2010 • April the 2nd 2010 • It’s easy II = 2 IV = 4 MMX = 2010 So let’s try it together, Let’s try translating: 15th May 2009 or 15-5-2009
