  2. China • Capital: Beijing (24 million) • Population: China is the world's most populous country with 1.28453 billion at the end of 2002, one-fifth of the world's total. • The Communist Party of China (CPC) is the country's sole political party in power. • President - Xi Jinping

  3. China • In the southwest is Tibet,( cool climate( North of Nepal) ) which China annexed in 1950. The Gobi Desert lies to the north. China proper consists of three great river systems: the Yellow River (Huang He), the Yangtze River (Chang Jiang) the third-longest river in the world, and the Pearl River or Xi • Shanghai is the largest city proper by population in China. (24 million) • Mandarin Chinese is spoken as a native language by 70% of the population.

Great Leap Forward • 1958 - change China from agrarian (farming) society to a modern, industrial society - in just five years. • Between 1958 and 1960, millions of Chinese citizens were moved onto communes. Some were sent to farming cooperatives, while others worked in small manufacturing. • China currently has a very strange mix of socialist, capitalist, and communist ideas for their economy

Korean War • On June 25, 1950, the Korean War began when some 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army poured across the 38th parallel, the boundary between the Soviet-backed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western Republic of Korea to the south. • This invasion was the first military action of the Cold War.

  13. Korean War • By July, American troops had entered the war on South Korea’s behalf. As far as American officials were concerned, it was a war against the forces of international communism itself. • Finally, in July 1953, the Korean War came to an end. In all, some 5 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives during the war. The Korean peninsula is still divided today. Demilitarized zone ( 6 miles )

  16. Japan • Japan’s terrain is mountainous so most people live in the coastal lowlands; Mount Fuji is tallest peak • Japan consists of four main larger islands and over 400 smaller islands. The main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. Honshu is the largest

Many Japanese also have some ability in writing and speaking English as it is a mandatory part of the curriculum in the Japanese educational system

  19. Southeast Asia • 11 countries – Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), Laos, Singapore Malaysia, Indonesia, East Timor, Brunei, Philippines

  20. Thailand • Has close ties with the United States to stop Communist expansion in Asia • During the Vietnam War the U.S. used the coutnry for air attacks against Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos • Bangkok is capital and transportation hub for Sutheast region

  21. Vietnam • 1954 Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnam independent from France • Vietnam was divided into North (communist led by Ho Chi Ninh and South (pro-Western by Ngo Dinh Diem) • Vietnam War started to unite the 2 countries, the US stepped in to help South Vietnam

Vietnam War • The Vietnam War was the prolonged struggle between nationalist forces attempting to unify the country of Vietnam under a communist government and the United States (with the aid of the South Vietnamese) attempting to prevent the spread of communism • President Johnson's goal for U.S. involvement in Vietnam was not for the U.S. to win the war, but for U.S. troops to bolster South Vietnam's defenses until South Vietnam could take over

  23. Vietnam War • U.S. troops fought a jungle war, mostly against the well-supplied Viet Cong. The Viet Cong would attack in ambushes, set up booby traps, and escape through a complex network of underground tunnels. • President Richard Nixon ordered the withdrawal of U.S. forces in 1973. In 1975, communist forces seized control of Saigon, ending the Vietnam War, and the country was unified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam the following year.

  24. Vietnam • U.S. withdrew in 1973 and South Vietnam fell to the Communists. Communists also gained control of Cambodia and Laos • 1986-Vietnam began to improve the economy and attract foreign investors

Indonesia • 17,000 Islands spread over 3200 miles • Large oil production and a member of OPEC • Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia, as well as the nation’s most populous city, and the world’s most populous island. Located on the island called Java • Indonesia is the largest Archipelago in the world.

  27. Philippines • English is an official language along with Filipino • U.S. introduced a democracy and western culture (Spanish American War) • Overpopulated with not enough food or jobs to go around • 1946 became independent from the United States • Over 7,000 islands; Capital Manila

Singapore • Southeast Asia’s smallest country -Singapore is a country in Southeast Asia, located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula.Location at tip of Malay Peninsula makes it center of trade between Europe and East Asia • One of the world’s busiest sea ports –largest container port in the world • English is the most-commonly used language in Singapore • Capital: Singapore

Malaysia • Malaysia is an Asian country, sharing borders with Singapore and Thailand. • Malaysia comprises of over two hundred islands and its coastline spreads over an area of approximately 4,675 km. • Kuala Lumpur as the capital Malaysia consists of thirteen states and three federal territories.
