  1. Welcome, Families! Open House 2014 1st Grade

  2. About Us: • Principal: Mrs. Donna Weaver • Assistant Principal: Mary Walters-Clark • Title I School: 65% (Percent of children from low income families.) Title I is a federally funded program available to school with a high percentage of students eligible for free and reduced lunch. These funds are above and beyond the district funds given to schools and are used to enhance student achievement. In Seminole County, Title I serves (14) public elementary schools. • School Demographics: 64% White, 27% Black, 7% Multiracial, and 2% Asian. • Enrollment: 780 Students School Grade: “B”

  3. Classroom Schedule This is what a typical day in our classroom looks like.

  4. Morning Arrival • All students are able to go to the cafeteria for complimentary breakfast or to the auditorium. • 8:05 or 8:30 am until the first bell rings to report to the classroom. • Parents are not allowed to follow children to their classroom.

  5. Dress Code Please refer to the SCPS Student Handbook for appropriate school attire. Gym shoes are need are P.E. day of Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

  6. School-Wide Expectations Work Habits 1) Putting forth his/her best effort 2) Using materials appropriately 3) Managing time wisely Student Skills 4) Listening and following directions 5) Working in an organized manner 6) Working independently 7) Working with others cooperatively 8) Doing class work in the assigned time 9) Participating in class activities/discussions Citizenship 10) Respecting authority 11) Getting along with peers 12) Practicing physical self control 14) Respecting rights/opinions of others 15) Accepting responsibility for his/her own actions

  7. Communicating Behavior with Parents Daily notes in planner with behavior color for the day.

Discipline Consequences K-2 • Blue = Above and Beyond = Helpful to Others • GREEN = Perfect Day = Verbal Warning • YELLOW = First behavior documentation = Classroom “Think Sheet” to be completed and sent home for parent signature • RED = Timeout in another classroom or lose recess ~ 5 part sheet for office = Call or email home • BLACK = Office referral A student may be immediately sent to office and a referral written at any point if behavior is severe.

Consequences - Verbal Warning After Verbal Warning, all misbehaviors are documented in Class Dojo - Classroom “Think Sheet” to be completed and sent home for parent signature - Timeout in another classroom or lose recess ~ behavior is also documented on five part sheet - Call or email home - Sent to office for consequence - Office referral

  10. Class Dojo We are excited to be using a virtual behavior system. Points will be given quickly to children by teachers when desired behaviors are seen. Points will also be taken from children who are not following our school-wide expectations. Parents can easily log on with an access code given by the teacher to view daily behaviors.

Great American Fundraiser • Monday Aug 25 began our 1st school-wide fundraiser. • Fundraiser ends on Sept 5 (all books and order forms due to teacher) • Students receive order forms and a book to help sell coupon books. • Books are $20 and will be sent home once orders are turned in and sent for processing. • Students are responsible for the sample book sent home. A payment will be due for any not returned on the last day of the fundraiser. • Even 1 book sold earns a prize!

MTSS: Multi-Tiered Systems of Support Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) is referenced in the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act as well as in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) reauthorization of 2004. MTSS represents a systematic method for evaluating the needs of all students and for fostering positive student outcomes through carefully selected and implemented interventions.

Reading/Language Arts • Reading instruction will focus on strategies using fiction and non-fiction texts. • Our curriculum, Reading Street, will be used during the Reading/Language Arts block to meet the Common Core Standards. Strategies include: • Monitor Comprehension • Activate and Connect • Ask Questions • Infer Meaning • Determine Importance • Summarize and Synthesize Students will be encouraged to read both in school and at home and to participate in the Accelerated Reading (AR) program.

  15. Math Go Math! Curriculum • Each student will receive a consumable math textbook and homework workbook. • The new Math series is designed cover all Florida State Standards. • The textbook provides many opportunities for intervention, re-teaching and enrichment practice. • Includes in depth coverage of the three big ideas, including higher level thinking questions. • Students will get a letter and password information for Think Central. (Math & Science)

  19. MEDIA ”Read Every Day!” • Reading Initiative: Read, Read, Read! Look for notes home about the dates for… • Fall Scholastic Book Fair Week-November 3-7, 2014 • Spring Scholastic Book Fair Week March 3-7, 2015 • Summer Scholastic BOGO (Buy One, Get One) Book Fair May 7-9, 2015 • Media will be open after school for parents to come with their children to check out books and take AR tests.   20. Homework • Read 20 mins each night • Spelling, High Frequency Words, Amazing Words are sent home weekly in the spiral notebook • Math pages will be sent home for practice of skills • Thursdays – study for weekly tests • Weekends – KEEP READING! • Check planners daily for notes & homework!

  21. DISMISSAL • Siblings and parents cannot go to the classrooms to pick up children. • Siblings can get together at the car ramp, walker/biker gate, or the cafeteria if they ride the bus. • Teachers will take students to the car ramp and the bus ramp for parent pick-up. • Make sure you have a Lake Orienta Car Tagif your child is going to be a car rider. • PLEASE remain in the car rider line and do not get out of your car to pick up your child—we will take your child to the car. • Car riders are not walkers and should not be picked up in the back of the school. Any change in your child’s transportation MUST either be in writing to the teacher or phoned into the main office 407-746-2650. Please notify your child’s teacher when phone numbers or address changes occur!!

  23. Birthday Celebrations Birthday cupcakes or cookies are welcome but not mandatory. Please notify your child’s teacher a few days in advance and have the treats ready for lunchtime.

  24. Cafeteria • Breakfast is available daily to all LKO students at no cost. • Student Lunch - $2.25 • Adult Lunch - $3.25 • You can visit www.myLunchMoney.com to prepay for lunch.

  25. NEW SCPS Lunchroom Visitor Guidelines • Visitors are welcome to join their students for lunch AFTER Labor Day. • During state testing weeks and/or poor outdoor weather conditions, visitors are not permitted.

  26. Visitor Procedures • Check-in at the main office to get a visitors sticker prior to lunch. • Be sure your sticker is visible for staff members. • Meet your child at the designated eating area outside of the cafeteria.

  27. Internet Exclusion Form • ALL STUDENTS HAVE INTERNET/COMPUTER ACCESS UNLESS AN INTERNET EXCLUSION FORM IS ON FILE AT LAKE ORIENTA ELEMENTARY. • THIS REQUEST MUST BE PUT IN WRITING AND SUBMITTED TO THE FRONT OFFICE EACH YEAR. • STUDENTS USE THE INTERNET FOR MANY EDUCATIONAL REASONS: • EDUCATIONAL GAMES ONLINE • TEACHER-LED RESEARCH • VIRTUAL FIELD TRIPS Many of the educational programs offered are facilitated online and/or use the school network. If a child has an exclusion form on file, he/she will not be able to participate in these programs.

  28. PHOTOGRAPHY • Changes to photography permission may now be done on Skyward.

Money • Applications for Free and Reduced Lunch may be completed online in the SCPS website—scps.k12.fl.us • Students with siblings already on a free or reduced lunch application in any Seminole County school will carry the same status until when all last year's applications will expire.  Please inform cafeteria at Open House if your child fits in this category. • Lunch price is $2.25 daily, snacks such as ice cream, cookie, chips, canned beverages and bottled water are in addition. • Payment can be made by cash, check ($10.00 minimum), credit card, or online from any computer at mylunchmoney.com • You can access your child’s account information such as balance or transactions on the food service website. PAYSCHOOLS • New online payment processing system • Link on Lake Orienta’s website and on the SCPS website under the “Parent” tab • Create an account (username and password) • Pay by e-check or credit card • No more lost checks or sending your children to school with cash • Ability to view account history of purchases • Assurance of private and secure transmissions • You will be able to pay online for fieldtrips, school pictures, t-shirts, fundraisers, supplies, and more!

  31. DIVIDENDS • Dividends are volunteers who help teachers and students with particular educational skills, computers, reading and/or helping teachers with clerical duties, or sharing a special skill or hobby. • Chaperone a field trip for your child’s classroom—you must have a Dividends form completed and approved two weeksprior to the field trip every year on-line at: http://www.scps.k12.fl.us/dividends/Home.aspx • Volunteer in a classroom, the Media Center, art room, or ask teachers how you can help.

  32. Conferences When? Sign up tonight on the back table to schedule a day and time for your first conference. Remember – you can log on to Skyward at any time to view grades! Why? • To discuss your child’s progress. This may include, assessments, classroom behavior and goals for first grade. • Other conferences can be scheduled when needed by contacting the teacher directly.
