  1. Biotechnology

  2. Objective of this unit • Understand how biotechnology is used to affect living organisms • discuss the following aspects of biotechnology • 1. specific genetic information available • 2. careers • 3. economic benefits to NC • 4. Ethical Issues • 5. Implications for agriculture

  3. EOG Practice Which project is most likely to interest a scientist working at a biotechnology company? • A study and reconstruction of fossilized bones • B conservation of key species within ecosystems • C development of genetically modified corn plants • D prevention of sewage leaking into water supplies

  4. Biotechnology • What is biotechnology? • Development of technologies and products using info about living things that help improve our lives and the health of our planet • What is technology?

  5. Careers in Biotech • What are some careers in biotech? • Scientists • Lab Technician • Engineers • Corporate Professionals

  6. Biotechnology careers Project Please include sources at the end or after each bullet point For one of these fields, Medicine, Agriculture, Genetics Research a biotech career and write • Category you chose • Name of career • What that career entails – when they go to work, what are they actually doing? ( 5 sentence paragraph) • Education/degree required • Average salary • Current research they are involved in (5 sent. Para) • Famous discovery in this field • 3 colleges that have degrees in this

  7. Economic impact of Biotechnology inNC • How much money does NC make? • 1.73 billion/yr — state and local taxes • How many people have jobs? • 237,655 total jobs — direct & indirect • How much money do companies make? • $59 billion/yr — economic activity $78,000

  8. How does Biotechnology affect your food? • Food is considered to be safe if it spoils before pathogens become dangerous • What can you do to delay pathogen growth? • Pasteurization • Low temperature (refrigeration and freezing) • Drying (removal of H2O)

  9. How does Biotechnology affect your food? • irradiation (UV, x-ray, gamma radiation)

  10. Modern Uses of bioTEchnology • How is biotechnology used for good? • To make mass quantities of medicine (penicillin, insulin) (next slide) • Forensic testing (DNA in court cases) • Bioremediation (removing pollution from soil/water) Crime Scene Suspect 1 Suspect 2 Suspect 3 Suspect 4

  11. Scientists began to try to increase the amount of penicillin produced by P. C. bacteria, by irradiating it with X-rays and UV rays in order to induce mutations of this species. They succeeded and developed a mutant that produced 1000 times the amount of penicillin than Fleming’s original culture

  12. How is biotechnology used for good? • To make genetically modified food • In 2008, New Zealand researchers developed a tear-free onion through gene-silencing technology. • In 2008, American researchers developed a biotech carrot with 41 percent more calcium than conventional carrots.

  13. Genetically modified food • U.S. researchers announced the production of genetically engineered cattle that cannot develop prion proteins, which can result in the degenerative disease bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

  14. GM food debate • Discover website – Home, April, Sidebar • http://discovermagazine.com/2013/april/16a-anti-gmo-efforts-us • What does GMO stand for? • Why are about 90 percent of the corn, soy, and cotton grown in the U.S. genetically modified? • A handful of scientists speculate that genetically modified crops may be responsible for what in humans? • What has constantly spraying genetically modified crops with Roundup caused? • Write one 5 sentence paragraph arguing that GM foods should be allowed and one 5 sentence paragraph arguing that GM foods should be banned

  15. EOG Prep • What makes fertilizers a benefit to the farming industry? • A They increase the nutrients in the soil • B They increase the growth of helpful bacteria • C The decrease the chance of bacteria growing in the soil • D The decrease the chance of plants being eaten by insects

  16. EOG Prep • Which is most likely responsible for the formation of cancer cells? • A an antibiotic • B a mutagen • C a bacterium • D a parasite
