What we have: • Books • Electronic books • Newspaper, magazine, and academic journal articles • Government documents • Media • University of South Alabama theses/dissertations • Archival and special collections (mostly at McCall Library)
How to search, generally speaking: • Start at the library homepage: http://library.southalabama.edu • Use keywords, not questions • Try different search terms • Use quotation marks to search a phrase (works most places) – example “University of South Alabama” • Keep track of where and how you searched
Where to search? It depends on: • What type of information you need • What format that information is in
Brief technical interlude! • You can use library’s electronic resources from home. • You will be prompted to log in with a box like this one: • Log in using the same credentials you use for Sakai.
Finding books • Can be print or electronic books • Find them in SOUTHcat, E-Book Collections, or OneSearch
SOUTHcat • USA Libraries’ catalog • Contains records for books, some e-books, government documents, media, some special collections, and USA theses/dissertations • Quick video overview: http://library.southalabama.edu/ewilson/tutorials/EDL561/southcat.html
E-Book Collections • Not all e-books are listed in SOUTHcat and OneSearch (notably Ebrary) so you may want to search collections individually • E-books from different sources work differently. Contact us if you run into problems. • Video overview: http://library.southalabama.edu/ewilson/tutorials/EDL561/ebooks.html
OneSearch • Searches all of SOUTHcat and about 185 databases • This is a lot, but not all of the library collection • For your purposes, I recommend using SOUTHcat, e-book collections, and education databases separately rather than OneSearch. • More info about OneSearch: http://libguides.southalabama.edu/onesearch
Finding articles • Newspaper, magazine, and academic journal articles • Most are in electronic format these days • Can search for them in individual, discipline-specific databases or OneSearch • Three important education databases: • Education Research Complete • ERIC • Professional Development Collection • Video overview: http://library.southalabama.edu/ewilson/tutorials/EDL561/databases.html • I recommend that you use the education databases rather than OneSearch.
Interlibrary Loan • If we don’t have something, we may be able to get it for you from another library. • Think ahead, this takes time. • More information is available on this page:http://libguides.southalabama.edu/ill
