  2. Difference Between High School and College High School College You are expected to take responsibility for what you do and don't do. You need to study at least 2 to 3 hours outside of class for each hour in class. Its up to you to read and understand the assigned material; lectures and assignments proceed from the assumption that you've already done so. Professors in different courses usually schedule tests at their discretion. Grades on tests and major papers usually provide most of the course grade. • You will usually be told what to do and corrected if your behavior is out of line. • You may study 0-2 hours outside of class and can do last minute test prep. • You will usually be told in class what you need to learn from assigned readings. • Teachers frequently rearrange test dates to avoid conflict with school events. • Consistently good homework grades may raise your overall grade when test grades are low.   3. Dual Credit Course– College courses where student will receive both high school credit and college credit by successfully completing one course. Types of College Courses Offered to High School Students Concurrent Credit Course– Courses that will only receive college credit. NO high school credit will be awarded. Both dual credit and concurrent credit courses must still be APPROVED by the high school.

  4. What is Expected of Dual Credit Students? • College enrollment is separate from high school course selection. Just because you select dual credit at your high school does not mean you are enrolled orregistered with Collin College. • Notify Collin College of any changes (adds or drops/ withdraws) to your dual credit schedule and complete the necessarypaperwork. • Pay careful attention to your instructor's syllabus, which includes gradingcriteria and attendance policies.

  5. What is Expected of Dual Credit Students? • Attend class! Missing class could result in failing thecourse. • Instructors have academic freedomto discuss controversial issues or subject matter that high school courses may notaddress. • Follow the college guidelines, policies, andprocedures. • Be prepared to invest out-of-class timeto complete courseassignments.

Dropping/Withdrawing from a Class • Droppingorchangingyourclassschedulemayaffecthighschool schedule • –Pleaseseeyourhighschool counselor tomakeanyschedulechanges. • Studentsare responsible for making sure they drop themselves properly from their dual credit or concurrent credit classes. • Students will need to drop themselves via their CougarWeb account.

Dropping/Withdrawing from a Class • Thisisaprocess thatMUSTbeapprovedbyyourhigh school counselor. • Studentswhowithdraw fromacoursebefore last day to withdraw (for Fall 2019 is October 18) will receive aWin thecourse.If a student does not withdraw by the deadline, they will receive a grade at the end of the term. • Students MUST withdraw from the class on both the high school side and college side. • Not withdrawing properly from your Collin College course may impact your high school and college transcript, as well as your financial aid.

  15. How to Drop/Withdraw Contact your high school counselor FIRST.They need to make sure you are still on target for graduation. Instructions • Log into CougarWeb account • Click on Registration/Planning • Click on Register for Classes • Select term “Credit Fall 2019” • Go to Summary in bottom right • Click on the drop arrow under “ACTION” • Click “Withdraw via Web” • Click “Submit”

  20. Dual Credit Courses are Transferable to Most PublicFour-Year Colleges and Universities in Texas *Students are responsible for determining if transfer institution will accept their credits*

  21. Most college daily grades are reported in Canvas. Students should refer to this system to retrieve college grades, NOT the high school reportingsystem. Your College Grades • Students are encouraged to keep track of their grades as assignments are returned. Not all assignments are graded; however, those that are should be monitored by thestudent. • In college courses, it is not abnormal to only have 4 graded assignments for thesemester. • Students, remember to always, always, always communicate concerns regarding grades with your professor directly.

  22. College Transcript • As a dual credit student you are beginning your college GPA and transcript. • A college transcript is a permanent educational record.

  23. FinancialAidImplications Not doing well may affect your ability to get financial aid after high school. 67% This applies to all forms of federal assistance including loans, grants, and scholarships.

Tips for Success • Get help early! • Communication with your instructor should be through Collin Email. • Check your Collin Email on a regular basis (at least once a day). • Use campus resources like the Writing Center and Math Lab. • DO NOT WITHDRAW from classes before talking to your high school counselor and your professor first. • Meet with high school counselor before registering for classes to make sure you are on the right track for high school graduation!

Additional Tips… • Plan your semester using a planner (paper or Google calendar, etc.). • Most of your work will be done outside of class (4-6 hours/week per course), so good time management is a must. • Absences for school approved events(Extra-curricular activities) • Communicate in advance. • Make alternative plans with professor. • Submit assignments early.
