WHAT IS DUAL CREDIT? • Dual Credit allows a student to fulfill high school graduation credits and earn college credit for the same class. • Should be noted: • Dual Credit is a Blinn class, taught by Blinn faculty, but on the Bellville High campus. • Dual Credit classes follow the college calendar and adhere to college policies and procedures, specifically in regards to attendance. • Student will have a permanent college transcript.

DUAL CREDIT ELIGIBILITY • Completed sophomore year of high school • Grade average of 3.0 (B Average) • Must demonstrate college readiness with scores on the TSI Assessment or be exempt • New State Law – Must have Bacterial Meningitis shot if attending class on college campus (unless qualify for waiver)

BENEFITS OF DUAL CREDIT • Earn transferable college hours* • Intellectual Challenge • May earn “Advanced Measure” for the DAP with a grade of A or B • Blinn ID • Earns access to all Blinn College facilities (library, student center, etc) and events (academic, athletic, music, theater) • Access to local area discounts where offered * Students are responsible for confirming that courses are required for 4-year college/university degree plans and/or accepted at a private institution.

  5. BELLVILLE HIGH SCHOOL DUAL CREDIT • Classes meet • Monday & Wednesday • Tuesday & Thursday • Generally, no classes scheduled to meet on Friday • 75 minutes in length • Fall 2015 • 7:35 am – 9:05 am

CHALLENGES • Required to pass “college readiness” test • TSI Assessment • Requires strong self-discipline and self-direction • College courses can be demanding in the level and amount of work that must be completed • College courses require more time • Should consider extracurricular activities and schedule constraints • Dual Credit will cost money (tuition, books, supplies) • Payment plans are available

  9. COLLEGE EXPECTATIONS • Prepare for class in advance • Read text ahead of time • Study ... Schedule 4-6 hours per week per class • Know when to ask from help from your instructor • Participate and ask questions • Take thorough notes, do not count on review sheet • Attend class • Blinn College has an attendance policy. Must attend class to earn credit.

  10. GRADING • College much different than high school • No progress reports, No report cards each six weeks • One FINAL GRADE, cumulative, will be posted at the end of the semester. This grade “as is” will appear on the student’s high school report card. The alpha grade will appear on the student’s Blinn transcript. • The student is responsible for following course syllabus, keeping track of grade and/or points earned during semester ...... AND keeping parents informed. • College grades are not mailed out.

  11. Dual Credit Enrollment Process-Apply • Apply for Admission to Blinn College • www.applytexas.org • Select 2 year college application • Select Blinn College- Brenham • Admission Basis is “Dual Credit” • Reason for attending is “to Earn credit for transfer” • Record user name and password

  12. Dual Credit Enrollment Process- Testing • TSIA • Texas Success Initiative Assessment • Designed to determine if student ready for college-level work • College Admissions Tests (for exemption) • ACT • SAT • Designed to determine readiness and predict future success in college courses

  14. TSI ASSESSMENT • Replaces the old ACCUPLACER or THEA • New – September 2013 • Three core areas: Reading, Math, Writing • Required for any incoming public college student in Texas, unless meet exemption • Mandatory Pre-Assessment Activity • Blinn College in Brenham is a testing facility

  15. PRE-ASSESSMENT ACTIVITY • Not scored • Designed to inform you about the importance of the TSIA • Sample test questions • Upon completion, a certificate will be emailed. This certificate must be presented with payment when taking the TSIA. No certificate, No testing.

TSI REGISTRATION • Contact Blinn/Brenham to reserve a day for testing (Monday-Thursday or designated Saturdays) • 979-830-4196 • Bellville Test Day- Saturday, January 24, 2015 • Sign up online (First come, first serve) • 55-60 Seats • Let the counseling office know that you plan to test that day

WHAT TO EXPECT ON TEST DAY • Bring to test center • Certificate of Pre-Assessment Activity • Photo ID • Do not bring • Food/Drink • Cell phones • Calculators or any other electronic devices • Backpacks, large bags or purses • Hats / caps • Testing is untimed • Expect testing to take 4-5 hours

  19. TSIA PASSING SCORES • To be declared “college ready” • Reading • Scores of 351-390 • Writing • Scores of 363-390 • Math • Scores of 350-390

COLLEGE ADMISSIONS TESTING • Standardized tests • Timed • Measure academic abilities • Determine readiness for college-level work • Used to predict future success in college courses • Registration takes place online • Students required to provide gender information and a photo of themselves upon registering • Photo is included on admission ticket, test center roster, and score report sent to school • No changes allowed day of test • Students must provide high school code Bellville High School Code 440575

SAT • Scoring • Individual subjects • Each subject score ranges from 200-800 • Essay has separate score 2-12 • Total • Composite of all three individual subjects added together • Critical Reading + Math + Writing • Highest Score possible = 2400 • Penalties • Typically ¼ point deducted for wrong answers • If you can narrow down choices to 2, make a guess • Otherwise, leave blank

ACT • Scoring • Each subject score ranges 1-36 • Composite or Total score – Average of the four sections together • Optional Essay – scores from 1-12 • Penalties • No penalties for wrong answers • Since incorrect answers do not count against student, always attempt to make an education guess • Always select an answer

DUAL CREDIT REGISTRATION • Blinn officials will be on the Bellville High campus to register students on March 25, 2015 • Pictures for Blinn ID’s will be made • The following items will be collected from students • Dual Credit Approval Form • TSI Assessment scores or SAT/ACT scores as proof of exemption • Transcript (Counselors provide) • Principal Permission Form (Counselors provide)

  32. DUAL CREDIT PAYMENT • Students are expected to set up and maintain their myBlinn account. • May attach personal email to Blinn email account • All correspondence from Blinn will come through the student’s Blinn email account • Payments may be made through myBlinn account • Deadline notices are posted on the student’s myBlinn account
